Strong Final Round Propels No. 26 Redlands Men's Golf to Second-Place Showing at SCIAC Championship Tournament

The No. 26 University of Redlands men's golf team put together its best round of the three-day Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament on Tuesday to secure second place in the regular-season finale.  With today's round of 288, the Bulldogs finished the 54-hole outing with a score of 882, which was seven strokes better than third-place University of La Verne, which is ranked No. 22.

In an exciting finish that forced amazing golf from the final group, sophomore Alex Stroes (San Marcos, CA) battled out of the bunker on 18 to post a final round of 70 for third place in the overall standings, just one stroke behind a tie for first.  He finished the tournament at plus-one 217 by shooting 73 and 74 on the first two days. Stroes led the field in par-three scoring with a minus-one average of 2.92.  Beyond his seven birdies, he also posted the most pars among the 47 golfers with 39 over the 54 holes.

Junior George Galanis (Glencoe, IL) fired off the best round of the day at 69 to move into a tie for ninth place with a final tally of 222 (75-78-69).  He ranked second to Stroes in the par-three scoring with an even 3.00.  He tallied seven birdies and 34 pars over the course of the tournament.

Sophomore Rowan Foxley (Arlington, WA) repeated his opening-round score of 74 to conclude the competition in a tie for 16th at 226 (74-78-74).  He led the field on the par-four holes by notching a plus-one average of 4.03.  Overall, he tallied 36 pars.

Freshman Cameron Cooper (Seattle, WA) also tied for 16th in the final standings with a 226 (73-76-77) that included 11 birdies in an impressive performance. He finished among the best golfers in par-five scoring with a minus-three average of 4.75.

With 36 pars, sophomore Cade Lawson (Lake Oswego, OR) provided consistent scores throughout the 54 holes en route to a total of 227 (78-74-75) to tie for 20th. 

Finally, freshman Dylan Merchant (Ellsworth, WI) tallied a three-round score of 240 (84-75-81) as Redlands' sixth golfer. 

With the aggregate scoring over the seven conference rounds, the Bulldogs take third with a grand total of 2,086 strokes behind No. 13 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (2,063) and La Verne (2073).

Redlands now awaits the NCAA's announcement on Sunday, May 8, about a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.
