Bulldog Men's Golf Moves into First Place with Solid Opening Round of SCIAC Championships

The No. 17/18 University of Redlands men's golf team opened the 2016 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships with a bang on Sunday at the beautiful Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont. With three of the Bulldogs' five golfers landing in the top 10 through 18 holes, Redlands holds the top spot in the standings with a day-one score of 286, which is 11 strokes ahead of the second-place team.

Senior swinger John McCord (Oakland, CA) hit the links on a mission by carding a day-one low of 65, which is five strokes better than the second-place golfer.

Freshman Rowan Foxley (Arlington, WA) put together a solid round with a 73 to earn him tied-for-third place. In addition, he is one of four golfers to hold a score below par at one-under.

Freshman Alex Stroes (San Marcos, CA) provided a lift for his team by holing a 74 to earn him tied-for-eighth place. Sophomore George Galanis (Glencoe, IL) and freshman Travis Winn (Salinas, CA) each scored a 76, which landed them in a tie 18th place.

Freshman Cade Lawson (Lake Oswego, OR) rounded out the Bulldog golfers by earning a tied-for-23rd place with a first-round mark of 78.

Prior to the tournament, Redlands trailed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by 11 strokes in the aggregate scoring through four rounds of conference competition. With Sunday's excellent outing, the Maroon and Gray made up the difference to move atop the conference standings with an overall stroke total of 1,511. Currently, the Bulldogs are three strokes ahead of second-place CMS and eight strokes ahead of third-place Cal Lutheran.

Redlands continues with the SCIAC Championships on Monday and Tuesday. Due to technological challenges, live scoring will not be available.
