Redlands

Jim Ducey moved into voluntary, phased retirement, effective April 30, 2020.  With the change, Ducey remains as a member of the faculty for the Department of Physical Education at the University of Redlands but will no longer be a head coach. 

He originally took over the men's basketball program in 2007 after long-time Head Coach Gary Smith stepped down from his post of 36 years.  Ducey made the move following a nine-year stint as the head women's basketball coach at Redlands.  He also worked with the Bulldog women's tennis program from 1992-1999 and then again from 2004-2009.    Overall, he has been involved with basketball and tennis at Redlands since the 1991-92 school year. 

During the fall of 2006, Ducey went on sabbatical to study other basketball training programs, including with the San Antonio Spurs and Head Coach Greg Popovich.  He works to complete a basketball manual as a result of this experience.

While at Redlands, Ducey has coached many All-Conference, All-American, Academic All-America, and National Champion players.  He is a four-time recipient of the West Region Tennis Coach of the Year award and one-time recipient of the National Tennis Coach of the Year award.  In 2003-04, he guided the women's basketball team to the program's second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship.  Ducey later enjoyed his 100th career victory as the Bulldog women's basketball coach on January 22, 2005, when the team defeated the University of La Verne, 66-61.  He also captured his 100th victory with the Redlands women's tennis team just a few months later.  For women's basketball, Ducey accumulated an overall record of 138-87, with a 77-43 mark in conference competition.

A 1978 graduate of Redlands, Ducey returned to his alma mater in 1991 from Cal State San Bernardino, where he was the head tennis coach for three seasons and director for two, while serving as head men's basketball coach from 1984-91.  Ducey graduated from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor of Arts in physical education and minors in art and geology.  He played basketball for Coach Smith, earning the Hustle Award and serving as a team captain.  He later went on to complete his Master of Arts in Education from Claremont Graduate School. 

In his free time, Ducey enjoys water and outdoor activities with his family, building, mechanics, and ceramics.  He is involved in the Redlands Optimist Club, NABC, WBCA,  ITA and volunteers for the Cardiac Arrhythmia Research and Education Foundation (C.A.R.E.).  Ducey resides in Redlands with his wife, Kelly, who also graduated from the University of Redlands.  Their oldest son, Ted, graduated from Redlands in 2003; their middle son, Bryan, completed his degree in 2007; and their youngest son, Jake, finished up as a Bulldog in 2011.  Bryan and Jake now serve as assistant coaches with the Bulldog men's basketball team.
