The University of Redland's men's basketball team took the short trip to Riverside to face the La Sierra Golden Eagles in non-conference action for the second time in a week. Although the Bulldogs won the turnover battle, 13-23, the Maroon and Gray could not capitalize on the La Sierra miscues resulting in a 91-102 loss.

First-year guard Robert Power (Pacific Palisades, CA) found first-year guard Tyson Legner (Phoenix, AZ) for the first points of the game with a quick jumper and the lead. Although La Sierra went ahead over the next couple of minutes, a key three-pointer from Power and two made free throws from first-year guard Justice Marmara (Grand Prairie, TX) kept the Maroon and Gray within one, 13-14, with 13:02 left in the first.

La Sierra held a slight lead in the ensuing minutes but at the 6:55-minute mark first-year guard Sam Abere (Lake Oswego, OR) made his presence known, grabbing an offensive board and dishing it out to first-year guard Josh Himel (Jacksonville, FL) for three points. On the very next play, Abere swiped a steal that turned into points off of a jumper from Legner to pull within three, 29-32.

Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles distanced the spread over the rest of the half putting the Bulldogs in a 42-53 hole at the break.

The U of R went on a 4-0 run in the first 30 seconds of the second stanza to start the half off on a high note. A successful trip to the charity stripe from Marmara for two points followed by a field goal from first-year guard Neil Owens (Pasadena, CA) allowed the Bulldogs to pull within seven points.

However, La Sierra found their rhythm once again and built a sizable lead by the midway point of the second half. The Maroon and Gray attempted to close the gap matching La Sierra, point for point, but unfortunately could not overcome the Golden Eagles first-half lead before the closing whistle. Marmara ended the half just the way he started with two made free-throws for a 91-102 final score.

Marmara completed the game with a team-high 26 points with Owens following close behind with 21 of his own. Abere also chipped in 18 points, six rebounds, and served as the main ball distributor with six assists.

The Bulldogs hit the road once again as they head to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe, Cal Lutheran University on Saturday, March 20, for a 2 p.m. tip-off against the Kingsmen.
