Reflections on the Bulldogs' Trip around the World

Reflections on the Bulldogs' Trip around the World

The trip was like nothing I could've ever imagined. We spent a week in China between Xi'an and Beijing, spent three nights in Egypt, a few nights at the University's beautiful Salzburg, Austria campus, and a few nights in downtown Munich, Germany. It was like stepping into a history book. It's still hard to put into words. We were immersed in four different cultures in a span of two weeks. It gives you a different perspective on life. I definitely have a newfound appreciation for FREE, clean, drinking water! (Water wasn't readily provided to us at our basketball games.)

We landed in Xi'an and learned of Ancient Chinese history in the historic city of Xi'an, which was once the capital. It was so clean - there was always someone sweeping the streets. People were just as fascinated with us as we were with the city. Countless times, we were the figures behind the lenses of their cameras and the subjects of their videos. During our rainy adventure in Tiananmen Square, a family photographed me holding their baby. Perhaps they thought I was a professional athlete.

While in Beijing, we walked the Great Wall of China. It's astonishing to see such an immense structure that can be seen for miles, knowing its construction succeeded without modern technology. The same goes for the Pyramids of Giza – from standing beside them to camel-backing in the desert, it was as if I was in a history book.

Salzburg was by far my favorite. It was so tranquil and refreshing. There seemed to be a breathtaking view no matter where you stood, and the social life was comforting. People were very friendly and active, either riding bicycles along the river or rock-climbing aside cliffs. Even being caught in a rainstorm while looking for food in the city was exhilarating.

We concluded our travels in Munich. Aside from the city itself, I loved the open countryside with green fields and sunflowers.

The trip was a once in a lifetime experience thus far, but most importantly, the trip allowed me to get a lot closer to both my teammates and especially my coaches. I learned of Ducey's fascination with rivers and fishing, and how the coaches' personalities match with their Chinese calendar spirit animals. Basketball was slightly different, too; it was much more physical for sure. I think the different, challenging competition will help translate to our success this season. We're all very eager. It was a fascinating trip that I'm excited to share for years to come.
