On staff since 2007, Joey Mariani became the Bulldogs' Associate Head Coach in July 2021, while maintaining his responsibilities as Director of Football Operations and Defensive Coordinator.  As of the 2017 season, he began overseeing the linebackers.

Since becoming the defensive coordinator, Mariani has helped the team capture two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles and make three trips to the NCAA Championships. As of the 2017 season, the Bulldogs have garnered 49 All-SCIAC defensive players, including four defensive players of the year in Mitch Shepherd (2016), Steven Locke Jr. (2013), Jordan Garcia (2012), and Mike Nicolini (2010), under his guidance.  Furthermore, Mariani has helped develop a pair of AFCA All-Americans in Nicolini (2010) and Daniel Gonzales (2017).

Based on scoring defense, the Bulldogs have ranked among the top two in the conference in SCIAC games each of Mariani’s eight years (2010-2017).  Furthermore, Redlands led NCAA Division III in red zone defense in 2013 and ranked first in turnover margin in 2014.

Mariani arrived at Redlands with over 17 years of coaching experience, holding stints at Garey High School in Pomona as the head football coach for six years and defensive coordinator for three years. More recently, he served as the defensive coordinator at his alma mater of Fontana High School. Earlier in his career, Mariani coached the defensive line and linebackers for the legendary Dick Bruich at FHS.

This native of Norristown, Pennsylvania, earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Cal State University San Bernardino. In high school, Mariani helped guide the Steelers of Fontana High School to the 1987 National Football Championship. Currently, he is the only person in Fontana High School history to win a CIF Championship as a player (1987) and as a coach (1989).

Mariani’s life goal is to simply have fun while earning a living. His desire to impact the lives of young people through coaching and teaching makes this an easy goal for him to achieve.

In his spare time, Mariani enjoys bass fishing and hunting. He and his wife, Kristen, have a daughter, Gianna.  They make their home in Yucaipa.
