U of R Football Lands Nine Players on All-SCIAC Teams

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the football All-SCIAC first and second teams with nine Bulldogs being recognized, including five being on the first team.

On the first team is wide receiver Evan Aguon (San Diego, CA), offensive lineman Kaleb Gibson (Pomona, CA), defensive lineman Mikey Duran IV (Ceres, CA), linebacker Craig Hunter (Murrieta, CA), and defensive back Scott Tinsley (Capitola, CA). Tinsley is the only former All-SCIAC member, making the first team for the second time in as many seasons. The other four first teamers are new All-SCIAC members.

On the second team there are four more Bulldogs: running back Andrew Kellstrom (San Bernardino, CA), linebacker Jacob Sega (Oceanside, CA), defensive back Jadin Michaels (Palm Springs, CA), and punter Vicente Garcia (Fontana, CA). Kellstrom, Sega, and Michaels are first time All-SCIAC members while Garcia makes the second team for the second time, both as a punter.

The Bulldogs have now had representation on the All-SCIAC teams every season since 1932, bar 1943-45 for WWII and 2020 for COVID-19. It's also the fifth-straight season Redlands has gotten either their kicker and/or punter on an All-SCIAC team.

First Team

Aguon leads the pack on offense, finishing the season with 128.4 all-purpose yards/game which places him 50th overall in the nation and second in conference. He led the Bulldogs in receiving touchdowns (5), yards (502), and receptions (51). Aguon also had a great return season, posting a 22.5 kickoff return average (58th, 3rd) and 14.3 punt return average (11th, 1st).

Aguon also had 229 punt return yards, good for 10th most in single-season history. His punt return average of 14.3 is the eighth highest. His 23 kickoff returns are tied for fourth most and his 518 return yards is sixth most.

In the Bulldogs game against Pomona-Pitzer (Sep. 10) he had 11 receptions and three receiving touchdowns. The catches are tied for the eighth most and the touchdowns are tied for the third most in single-game program history.

Gibson was a stalwart on the offensive line, playing in all 10 games. He helped the offense average 281.5 yards/game, 25.9 points/game, and 121.2 rushing yards/game.

Duran played in all 10 games and set career-highs in total tackles (23), tackles for loss (4.5), and sacks (1). All those totals bested his career totals from the two prior seasons.

Hunter was second in the conference in total tackles with 75. He also had 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss. His tackles are the seventh most in single-season history, sacks were seventh in conference, and tackles for loss were tied for third most in conference and 10th in program history.

Tinsley was third in the conference and set a career-high with 63 tackles from his DB spot. He added four tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and three interceptions with one returned for a 75-yard touchdown.

Second Team

Kellstrom got his first chance to be RB1 and took advantage with a career-high 738 yards and 10 touchdowns. His yards are the fourth most in the conference and his touchdowns are third. He had a career-day with 143 yards and four touchdowns at Cal Lutheran (Oct. 8). The four rushing touchdowns are tied for the second most in a single game in program history. He followed that game with a career-high 147 yards and another touchdown at Chapman (Oct. 15).

Sega came into his senior season with 22 career tackles, he finishes with 87 after a 65-tackle season. He finishes in seventh in the conference in tackles. He added four TFL, two sacks, and a pass breakup.

Michaels decided to return for his graduate season and posted a career-high 42 tackles, an interception, and two pass breakups. He ends his career with 99 tackles, four interceptions, and 15 pass breakups.

Garcia ended the regular season leading the nation in punting at 45.6 yards/punt. That mark is a new single-season program record, beating out Sean Lipscomb's 45.2 average from 2000. He narrowly missed a spot in the top-10 for punting yards by less than 100 yards despite missing the top-10 list of most punts by 11 punts. The Bulldogs finished second in the nation in net punting at 41.16 thanks to Garcia's right leg.

Redlands finished the season 4-6, 4-2 SCIAC. After a 1-5 start they ended the season with wins in three of their final four, including a 21-point comeback win against conference champions Pomona-Pitzer (Oct. 29). They open their 2023 season at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.
