Football Preview: University of Redlands vs. Pomona-Pitzer Colleges

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team picked up their second win of the season last Saturday with a 36-19 win over the University of La Verne (ULV). The win keeps the Bulldogs (2-5, 2-1) within a game of first place (Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps).

The Bulldogs' week nine matchup is with Pomona-Pitzer (6-1, 3-0) at home inside Ted Runner Stadium beginning at 1:05pm. They played the Sagehens on the road in a week two non-conference game where they lost 21-20 on the final play of the game (Box Score | Recap | Preview) after holding the lead in the fourth quarter.

Week 8 Results

Redlands (Box Score | Recap)

The Bulldogs hosted the Leopards last Saturday and won with freshman quarterback Tyler Tremain (Folsom, CA). Tremain started and went 7-15 with 65 yards through the air, 35 of which came on a completion to Aidan Shinfeld (Studio City, CA). Tremain's best attribute was his legs, as he ran for 126 yards on only 10 carries along with a touchdown.

Other notable performances came from Andrew Kellstrom (San Bernardino, CA) who had 81 yards rushing and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, Craig Hunter (Murrieta, CA) had a team-high eight tackles and added a tackle for loss. Scott Tinsley (Capitola, CA) had seven tackles, recovered a fumble, and intercepted his third pass of the season.

As a team the Bulldogs gained 330 yards of offense with 265 of those yards coming on the ground, where they averaged six yards per rush attempt. They did commit nine penalties for 98 yards and fumbled three times, but only lost one.

The defense used four forced turnovers and a 96-yard pick-six by Dre Owens (Pico Rivera, CA) with only :20 seconds remaining in the first half to hold the Leopards down. They also held the Leopards to a 31 percent third down conversion percentage.

Pomona-Pitzer (Box Score)

The Sagehens got their sixth win of the season, 28-24, thanks to a game-winning touchdown at Cal Lutheran University in the final two minutes of the game.

Despite the score, the Sagehens outgained the Kingsmen by 185 yards, held them to only 2.3 yards per carry on 24 attempts, and had four sacks.

Quarterback Skylar Noble threw for 273 yards on 28 completions and 42 attempts, two touchdowns, and one interception. Noble was also the leading rusher in the game with 136 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

Nate Barewin led the team with eight tackles, Mark Carling had three tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack, and Graham Olson's two tackles were both sacks, he also forced a fumble.
