Redlands Football battles the elements in 38-28 loss to Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team battled the elements Saturday night in a road match-up with Chapman University.  The Bulldogs faced rain, a late night and multiple lightning delays and when the evening concluded, which was around midnight the Maroon and Grey found themselves with a tough 38-28 loss.

Redlands drops to 1-5, 1-1 SCIAC, while Chapman improves to 4-3, 1-2 SCIAC.

The lightning struck around 6:30 p.m. and delayed kickoff to nearly 8:00 p.m. Lightning crept back into the area at halftime and delayed the game once again.

Redlands totaled 330 yards of total offense with 124 coming through the air and another 206 on the ground.  The Maroon and Grey gave up 540 yards of offense (405 Passing/135 Rushing) and surrendered over 100 yards receiving to three different Chapman receivers.

Myles Herrera (Yucaipa, CA) finished 11-for-24 for 124 yards and two touchdowns.  Andrew Kellstrom (San Bernardino, CA) found the endzone once and added 16 carries for 147 yards with a 9.2 yards per rush average and a long run for 50-yards.  Calel Olicia-Aramboles (Westfield, IN) would add ten touches for 59 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

Evan Aguon (San Diego, CA) led the receivers being the only one with multiple catches.  He hauled in seven receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown, averaging 11.6 yards per catch.  Graig Padgett (Steilacoom, WA) had the other score coming from 18-yards out.

Chapman jumped out in front with an early field goal and would then use six-plays on their next series to find the endzone putting them on top 10-0.  Redlands was quick to answer with back-to-back touchdowns and an interception, which swung the momentum.  The first was to Aguon from four-yards out :05 seconds into the second quarter, which capped off an 11-play, 75-yard drive.  UR would then get the ball right back following an interception from Marvin Perkins Jr. (Las Vegas, NV) that stalled a deep drive by CU.  Six-plays later Kellstrom struck with the go-ahead touchdown as he found an opening in the middle before taking it to the house from 50-yards out.

This put the Bulldogs on top 14-10 and ended a 6-play, 80-yard drive that spanned 3:32.  Following a pair of punts Chapman found themselves with the ball with 1:40 on the clock.  They would pick up a first down on two rushes before having Nathaniel Espinoza find Spencer Corona for a 34-yard hook-up.  The very next play Espinoza and Corona would connect again this time for a 14-yard touchdown that put Chapman on top 17-14 at the half.

With halftime came another delay, but that did not slow down Chapman who would post 21 points in the third quarter.  Espinoza found Wyatt Hardin for a 21-yard score two minutes into the second half.  CU would then go on to add another score this time on the ground from Marcos Reyes who punched it in from 10-yards out moving the score to 31-14.

The Bulldogs ended the run finding the endzone at the end of the quarter with Herrera orchestrating a 9-play, 75-yard drive that covered 3:59.  Kellstrom had a big run of 29-yards and Padgett ended the drive with an 18-yard TD reception.  This made it a 10-point game, but it was quickly erased as Chapman' Espinoza would connect with Hardin for a 75-yard pass and catch on their first play of the next series.

Trailing 38-21 the Bulldogs found it tough across the final 15:00 minutes to gather any offense, posting a three-and-out and throwing an interception.  But they did put up points on the board when Scott Tinsley added a pick-six with 10:17 left on the clock, moving it back to a ten-point game.

Vicente Garcia (Fontana, CA) had a busy night with six punts for 278 yards, averaging 46.3 yards per punt with a long being for 60-yards and another being a touchback.  Brendan Marmion (Aliso Viejo, CA) totaled four kick-offs for 232 yards, averaging 58.0 yards per kick to go with two touchbacks.

Dawson Brokman (Martinez, CA) finished with seven tackles (4 Solo/ 3 Assisted), Tinsley added six assisted tackles along with the pick six that went for 75-yards.  Jadin Michaels (Palm Springs, CA) totaled five tackles and a pass break-up and Perkins Jr. totaled three tackles and the second pick.

Redlands looks to bounce back next Saturday, October 22 during Homecoming when they host the University of La Verne beginning at 7:00pm.
