Senior Blake Roy and Junior Calhoun Helmberger Represent Redlands on CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for Football

It was announced earlier today that senior tight end Blake Roy (Camas, WA) and junior offensive lineman Calhoun Helmberger (Tacoma, WA) of the University of Redlands football team landed on the 2019 College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team for NCAA Division III football.

CoSIDA's Academic All-District award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Among the 30-man team, Roy is the only tight end to be selected while Helmberger is one of five offensive linemen to be recognized on the elite list for District 8. One student-athlete from Chapman received the honor for the only other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) representative on the list.

Roy leads the team with 23 receptions for 222 yards and five touchdowns. Through nine games, he has helped Redlands average 208.0 yards through the air.  His best game this season came against Pomona-Pitzer when he accounted for six receptions and two touchdowns in the 38-17 victory. Last year, Roy garnered First Team All SCIAC and D3football.com All-West Region Tight End recognition. This year he has been selected as a 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist which recognizes the best student-athletes in the nation for their combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership. He is also a likely four-time member of the SCIAC All-Academic team and Redlands Scholar-Athlete.

Helmberger is in his second season as a starter for a Bulldog football team that has racked up 3,815 yards of total offense with an incredibly balanced performance through the air (1,872) and on the ground (1,943). Helmberger has been a key component of the Redlands offensive line that has averaged 423.9 yards per game including 215.9 rushing yard per contest and 40.4 points per game. The Bulldogs have scored 20 touchdowns on the ground this season while only giving up 11 sacks. He was also a member of the 2018 All SCIAC First Team and a likely three-time SCIAC All-Academic and UR Scholar-Athlete.

Roy and Helmberger are now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration, which will be announced in early December.
