REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team hosted Caltech for a home doubleheader at The Yard on Sunday and won both games in run-rule fashion as they completed the series sweep with 11-1 and 13-3 victories.

The Maroon and Grey have won three in a row and improve to 19-13, 9-8 SCIAC and have positioned themselves in a great spot to continue fighting for a chance to compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament.

Game 1 (W, 11-1)

Redlands jumped ahead early 4-0 after three innings.  They used a Beaver error to go in front 1-0 in their opening at-bats and then received a pair of RBI singles from Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) and Mark Kirkland (Redlands, CA) that extended it to 3-0.  The game then moved to 4-0 after Matthew Brumbaugh (Chula Vista, CA) doubled down the left field line.

Starter Tyler Reiter (San Diego, CA), picked up his third win on the season after working around a run in the fifth as he threw five innings, giving up just one run with six strikeouts before departing for Jakob Russell (Fontana, CA). In the bottom of the fifth the Bulldogs added another five runs on five hits as they opened the game up 9-1.  Payton Walsh (Santa Ana, CA)Max Smyley (Sarasota, FL)Jonah Advincula (Santa Clara, CA), and Anderson all picked up RBIs, and Smyley and Max Clark (Fontana, CA) would add a pair of doubles to the mix.

In the bottom half of the seventh the Bulldogs put the game away when Advincula drove home his third and fourth runs of the game on a double to right-center that gave the Bulldogs the run-rule.

Hitting in the leadoff spot, Advincula went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Smyley was a perfect 4-for-4 with three extra-base hits, three runs, and an RBI. Kirkland also reached base all four times going 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI effort. In relief of Reiter on the mound, Russell pitched two shutout innings with four strikeouts  .

Game 2 (W, 13-3)

After holding big leads in the first two games of the series, the Bulldogs found themselves trailing for the first time on the weekend going down 3-0 after the Caltech opening at-bats. Redlands, though, would even the game at three thanks to a three-run second that saw Walsh drive home Esteban Nakashima (Riverside, CA), Advincula plate Walsh with an infield base hit and Smyley come in on a wild pitch.

Redlands took the lead for good in the fourth with a two-run single from Advincula, a two-run double from Anderson and a base hit from Brumbaugh who reached when the third baseman was unable to secure the high hop.

In the sixth Brumbaugh added two more RBIs to his day's total coming on a double down the left field line.  Two batters later Clark would score another when he would hit a ball on the infield allowing the runner to come in and score from third.

After Andrew Rueter (San Diego, CA) completed his second shutdown inning in the top half of the seventh the Bulldogs rallied for the games final two runs coming on two outs.  Smyley and Advincula started the frame off both reaching on errors.  Anderson then singled through the left side, which advanced Advincula into scoring position with Kirkland coming to the plate with a 3-for-4 afternoon in hand. Kirkland would not be called upon though as Redlands pressed the issue with a double steal from Advincula and Anderson.  The ensuing throw from the catcher went down the line, allowing Advincula to come in and score to complete the run-rule, 13-3.

It was a joint offensive effort for the Bulldogs as Advincula (2-for-5, two runs, three RBIs), Anderson (3-for-5, two runs, two RBIs), Kirkland (3-for-4, one run), Brumbaugh (2-for-4, one run, three RBIs), and Walsh (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) all had multi-hit days to spearhead a 14-hit performance as a team.

On the mound Russell again was called upon, this time with three shutout innings in relief of Cameron Kundig (Redlands, CA).  Rueter then finished off the final six outs with only one hit allowed and two strikeouts.

Redlands remains at home this Friday, April 29 when they host Cal Lutheran University beginning at 3:00pm.
