Bulldog Baseball Falls to Cal Lu in Rain-Shortened SCIAC Contest

The University of Redlands baseball squad took to the diamond on Friday afternoon to face off against the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen for game one of a three-game series in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action under subpar weather conditions. The Bulldogs struggled to string together any positive momentum en route to a 2-6, five-inning loss that was called due to rain.

Sophomore starter Felix Minjarez (Riverside, CA) was given the nod on the bump for the opening game of the series and started off hot in the top of the first inning by retiring the side in order which included one strikeout. However, he quickly struggle by allowing six more runs over the course of five innings.

The Bulldogs plated two runs, with the first coming in the bottom of the third after senior left-fielder Mitch Samson (Orangevale, CA) grounded a single up the middle to plate junior catcher Kyle Wallau (San Mateo, CA), who reached via double.

Freshman shortstop Aaron Singh (Anaheim, CA) was responsible for the second Bulldog run in the bottom of the fifth inning by launching a lead-off homerun over the left-field wall.

Unfortunately, Redlands was unable to craft a possible comeback due to the game being called for poor weather conditions en route to a 2-6 loss.

The Bulldogs notched six hits on the day, with two coming off the bat of Samson. Junior center-fielder Christian Conci (San Mateo, CA), senior first baseman Ryan Franklin (Manhattan Beach, CA), Singh, and Wallau each recorded a hit.

Minjarez was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs off nine hits in five innings of work.

The Bulldogs complete a three-game set against the Kingsmen with a doubleheader on the road tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
