Junior Maria Ramirez (Orange, CA) and sophomore Tucker Cargile (Denver, CO) of the University of Redlands have been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's and Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week for September 17-23.
Ramirez broke the school record in the 5k with a third-place showing of 17:48.7 at the Coyote Classic. She was the fastest runner amongst all colleges and only trailed two unattached competitors. She improved upon the previous school record that stood since 1983 by more than 10 seconds.
Furthermore, Cargile topped all competitors at the Coyote Classic with an impressive 8k-time of 25:11.2 for an average mile of 5:04.0. With his career-best performance, he bettered his position among the Bulldogs' all-time, top-10 list at No. 5, just one second off the fourth-fastest time in school history. He also completed Saturday's race with a three-second lead over second place.
