Redlands Women’s Volleyball Stumbles to Cal Lutheran

The University of Redlands women's volleyball team hit the road to face the Regals of Cal Lutheran University on Tuesday evening in Thousand Oaks. Despite a .353 showing by junior middle blocker Sofia Olsson (Cupertino, CA), the Bulldogs suffered a straight-set loss by scores of 16-25, 9-25, 18-25 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.

The closest set saw Redlands battle to a 12-12 tie with kills by junior right-side hitter Megan Houston (Des Moines, WA), junior right-side hitter Maloree Kupp (Sunnyside, WA), junior middle blocker Michaela Rappa (Roseville, CA), first-year outside hitter Natalie Starlin (Las Vegas, NV), and Olsson.  In addition, sophomore defensive specialist Ally Busch (Long Beach, CA) tossed in a well-timed service ace from the back row.

However, CLU quickly pulled away on five-straight kills.

The Bulldogs fought back to make it 18-22, as Rappa, Olsson, and sophomore right-side hitter Savannah Casey (Encinitas, CA) found hardwood for kills.  But, the Regals answered once again to seal the deal on the sweep of the Bulldogs.

Olsson finished the night seven kills on 17 attempts with just one error.  Starlin chipped in four kills, while junior setter Emily Marty (Chula Vista, CA) dished out 13 assists.  Busch provided 19 digs, as Starlin added 14.

Redlands (6-5, 0-3 SCIAC) strives to get back on track when it hosts the University of La Verne on Friday, September 21, at 7 p.m. in Currier Gym.
