SCIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Preview: No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer vs. No. 4 University of Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team qualified for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will now travel to take on the top-seeded Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer in the Semi-Finals on Wednesday, November 2 at 2:30pm.  

Redlands finished the regular season with a 6-9-1, 6-5-1 SCIAC record.  They posted a 4-3 mark inside Farquhar Field and a 2-6-1 record on the road.  They earn a spot in the SCIAC Tournament for the first time since 2018 and the ninth overall for the program.

The winner of this game will play the winner of the No. 2 Cal Lutheran vs. No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps match-up on Saturday, November 5 with time TBD.

Previous Meeting

The Bulldogs and Sagehens have played twice this season with PP winning both match-ups.   The first game was on the road at the end of September for the Maroon and Grey where they fell 4-1, despite only trailing 2-1 at the half (Box score | Recap).  The second time they faced off was on the Bulldogs Senior Night a week ago where again UR trailed by one at the break before being edged 3-1 (Box score | Recap).    

In game one this season, Peyton Fendrich (Clackamas, OR) scored the lone Bulldog goal with :24 seconds remaining in the first half. Redlands faced 19 shots and five corners. Courtney Stewart (San Jose, CA) was able to make four saves to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance for nearly 70:00 minutes.

In the second match-up the Bulldogs went down 3-0 before getting one back courtesy of Alessandra Echauri (Gilroy, CA) in the 78th minute. Fendrich had the assist on Echauri's first career goal. The game was competitive in terms of shots, with P-P only holding a one-shot advantage (22-21).  But they put half of them on-target in comparison to the Bulldogs' six.

Redlands

This season the Bulldogs put together an impressive run towards the SCIAC Regular Season Championship totaling 19 points.  They enter the tournament on a three game losing skid and are 1-4-1 over their last six games. 

UR had three players named to the All-SCIAC teams with Charlie Baum landing on the 1st Team and Ciara Aw and Peyton Fendrich getting recognized on the 2nd Team.

As a team Redlands ranks No. 3 in Goals (16), Shots Per Game (14.0), Assists (10), and Shot Percentage (.095).  They rank No. 4 in Shots on Goal (75) and No. 5 in Corner Kicks (46). 

Fendrich and Tori Zielinski lead the Maroon and Grey with three goals apiece.  Sami Salinas finished with three assists and Alex Zerbel another two.  Fendrich and Zielinski tied with seven total points, while Baum, Salinas, Sabrina Semmere, and Natalie Turiace would each add five points.

In goal Courtney Stewart was the mainstay totaling 72 saves, a 1.87 Goals Against Average and a .720 Save Percentage.  Her sister Shannon Stewart added 13 saves on the season with a 2.24 Goals Against Average and an .867 Save Percentage.         

Pomona-Pitzer

The Sagehens are coming in as the No. 1 overall seed for the SCIAC Tournament following an 11-2-3, 8-1-3 record.  They also clinched their fourth consecutive SCIAC Regular Season Championship. 

They had seven players named to the All-SCIAC teams with Naomi Meurice, Hannah Kim, Charlotte Tapp, and Hannah Mandell all landing on the 1st Team, while Genevieve Gray, Amanda Khu, and Taylor Venenciano finding their way on the 2nd Team.

As a team PP ranks No. 1 in Shots (204), Goals (22), Shot Percentage (.108), Shots Per Game (17.0), and Assists (13).  They are also No. 2 in Shots on Goal (100), Corner Kicks (53), and Shutouts (7). 

Tapp leads the Sagehens with six goals and twelve points on the season.  Khu comes in with four goals, three assists, and eleven points to her name.  Isla Burch, Eliana Prosnitz and Kelsey Shintaku each with six points on the season.  Taylor Kane leads the trio of goalies with 28 saves followed by Naomi Meurice with 26.  Meurice posted a 0.35 Goals Against Average and an .897 Save Percentage, while Kane finished the regular season with an 0.83 Goals Against Average and an .824 Save Percentage.
