The University of Redlands women's soccer team suffered a 0-1 loss to the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran University (WA) in Saturday night's non-conference contest on Farquhar Field.
The Lutes did their work early with a tough goal in the opening minute of the match to put them up.
Nonetheless, the Bulldogs put forth a quality effort with a shot on goal from sophomore midfielder Charlie Baum (Hesperia, CA) in the 13th minute. Redlands remained relentless by pressuring the Lutes throughout the half but continued to face a deficit at the break.
A minute into the second stanza, sophomore midfielder Tristen Sherley (Novato, CA) earned another chance for Redlands, but her attempt was blocked by the Lutes' defense. The Bulldogs returned the favor in the 55th minute by coming up with a defensive block of their own to hinder Pacific Lutheran's attempt. The Maroon and Gray's backline allowed only one more shot from the Lutes for the duration of the match.
Redlands' best attempt at an equalizer came from Sherley, who forced the Pacific Lutheran goalkeeper to make a diving save in the 84th minute.
However, the Lutes protected their lead by controlling possession as time wound down and handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
Redlands (3-1-0) hits the road for the first time this season in a non-conference matchup against familiar foe, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, on Saturday, September 14, at 7 p.m.
