The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team came up short in a 3-18 decision on the road against No. 23 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday.

After the Athenas put two up on the board, junior midfielder Sadie Pickering (Tacoma, WA) scored her first goal of the season on a free-position shot to make it 1-2 with 20:04 left to play in the first half.

However, CMS took advantage of Redlands' turnovers to build a 9-1 lead heading into the break.

Following two more goals by CMS, the Bulldogs regained possession on senior attacker Kelsey Ruhl's (Seattle, WA) caused turnover on the Athenas' clear attempt and worked the ball downfield. Three fouls later, the Maroon and Gray earned a free-position attempt, which was saved by the goalkeeper. But senior midfielder Hanna Morford (West Linn, OR) hustled for the ground ball and immediately scored off the rebound to make it 2-11.

Although CMS scored on its next possession, Redlands worked the ball around until Pickering snuck a shot into the back of the net for the visiting team's third score with 16:04 remaining.

Despite causing 14 Athena turnovers and benefitting from first-year goalkeeper Annie Van Norstrand's (Littleton, CO) 12 saves, the Bulldogs could not overcome the deficit.

For the game, Pickering scored two goals and tallied three ground balls, three draw controls, and caused two turnovers. Ruhl added three caused turnovers, while Morford led the team with four draw controls to go along with her goal.

Redlands (0-2, 0-2 SCIAC) continues its SCIAC slate on the road against Occidental College on Wednesday, February 27, at 5 p.m.
