Women’s Golf Finishes Second at SCIAC Championships | Hannah Jugar takes Fourth Overall

BEAUMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Golf team finished in second place for the three-day 2022 SCIAC Golf Championships at Morongo Golf Club – Tukwet Canyon.

The Maroon and Grey posted scores of 309-296-309 (897), which put them four shots behind No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer (910), who won the event.  Across the seven rounds on the season, which included results from SCIAC No. 1, SCIAC No. 2, and the SCIAC Championships the Bulldogs finished second in the conference standings.

Redlands held a 12-shot lead midway through the final round, but saw Pomona-Pitzer storm back to go-ahead eventually earning the AQ Bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.  It was a two-team race throughout the event with the Bulldogs and Sagehens battling it out.  After Day 1 they were both tied at the top, at the conclusion of Day 2, Redlands moved ahead by three strokes, and by the end of 54 holes Pomona-Pitzer managed to erase that deficit and outscore the Bulldogs by seven across the final 18 holes to come from behind to win by four strokes 910-914. 

The rest of the field included No. 13 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3rd – 927), No. 28 Cal Lutheran University (4th – 952), No. 23 Chapman University (5th – 975), Whittier College (6th – 1022), No. 47 Occidental College (7th – 1032), and the University of La Verne (8th – 1211).

Hannah Jugar (Chula Vista, CA) led the field after 36 Holes posting a 74-70 (E), but slipped to 4th on the leaderboard after shooting +11 over on the final day for an 83.  Iris Liu (Diamond Bar, CA) was two spots off in a tie for 6th, remaining consistent over the three rounds going 78-76-77 (231).

Kendall Nicholson (Bellevue, WA) posted three rounds in the 70's opening up with a 76-77, but dropped to a 79 (+7), which moved her down three spots into 9thMalia Kiger (Hermosa Beach, CA) made a nice jump recovering from an opening 85 to go 74-76, which bumped her up three spots into a tie for 10th.  She shot +4 over her final 18 holes.

Gabrielle Kiger (Hermosa Beach, CA) went 81-85 to start her championships, but was able to make some noise on the final day posting a 77, that moved her to 19th overall.  She shot +5 on the final round.                   

The last Bulldog to score was Andrea York (Oakdale, CA) who slipped seven spots into a tie for 20th.  After an 83-76 to start the event she went 86 over the final 18 holes, shooting +14. 

Redlands led the field in Par 3 Scoring (3.32 | +19) and Total Pars (141).  They were No. 2 in Par 4 Scoring (4.35 | +53), No. 3 in Total Birdies (31), and No. 4 in Par 5 Scoring (5.43 | +26). 

Nicholson, Liu and Jugar all tied for 2nd in Par 3 Scoring (3.25 | +3).  Jugar was No. 3 in Par 4 Scoring (4.13 | +4), and Liu was 4th in Par 5 Scoring (5.08 | +1).

There were three Eagles over the three days with two coming from the Bulldogs and the Kigers.  G. Kiger hit hers on the Par 5 16th in Round 1 and M. Kiger hit hers on the Par 5 6th in Round 3.     

Redlands now waits to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships, set for May 10-13 in Houston, TX (Bay Oaks Country Club).
