No. 12 U of R Women's Golf Leads SCIAC Championship Tournament with Opening-Round 306

With three players among the top four, the No. 12 University of Redlands women's golf team impressed on day one of the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.  The Bulldogs fired off a first-place score of 306 in the opening round on Thursday.

Through five of the seven conference rounds to determine the conference champion, the Maroon and Gray remains in second place (1,536) but trails Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by only four strokes.  Pomona-Pitzer Colleges maintains its third-place position (1,579) with a 22-stroke advantage on fourth-place Chapman University.

During Thursday's round, sophomore Annie Hay (University Place, WA) paced the tournament with her opening tally of 73.  She also led the field with a plus-two 4.20 average on the par fours and a top-of-the-charts, par-five score of minus three for 4.25.  Finally, she sank five birdies to lead the tournament as well. 

Senior Keilee Bessho (La Canada, CA) entered the clubhouse with a 75 to tie for second place, while first-year Kendall Nicholson (Bellevue, WA) sits in a tie-for-fourth with a 77.  Bessho was one of four competitors to record an eagle on the day.  She also tallied a minus-one 4.75 on the par fives.  Nicholson provided three birdies and nine pars in a fine effort. 

Sophomore Mariah Moon (La Quinta, CA) completed the Bulldogs' scoring four on day one with an 81.  She knocked in nine pars.

In addition, first-year Dana Condon (Palm Desert, CA) signed her scorecard with an 85, while sophomore Makayla Sugidono (Scottsdale, AZ) earned a 90.

Redlands tees off in the second round on Friday, April 19, at the Brookside Golf Club.
