Redlands Women's Basketball Leads Start to Finish in 58-51 Win over Whittier Poets

The University of Redlands women's basketball team took to the road on Saturday afternoon to square off against the Whittier College Poets in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action. The Bulldogs displayed a solid effort on the hardwood by leading the entire contest en route to a 58-51 victory.

The Bulldogs wasted no time on the offensive front by firing off an 8-2 run to start the game. Sophomore guard Angela Silver (Scotts Valley, CA) got the ball rolling with a lay-up, which was assisted by sophomore guard Courtney Chen (La Canada, CA). Chen followed up her assist with a bucket, before junior guard Jade Cheldelin (Portland, OR) aided the scoring with a jumper. Senior forward Brinsley Farry (Ventura, CA) capped off the run by snapping the bottom of the net with a jumper, eventually leading to a 15-11 Bulldog advantage after the first quarter.

Farry and Silver continued to fuel the offensive train for the Bulldogs by combining for the first four points of the second frame. Junior forward Sydney Bennett (Agoura Hills, CA) extended Redlands' lead moments later with a pair of successful shots at the free-throw line. After a Redlands timeout, Cheldelin remained hot with another jumper. The Bulldogs entered halftime with a 26-18 lead.

With Cheldelin and Farry carrying the offensive load early in the third quarter, sophomore forward Reyna Ta'amu (Lakewood, CA) joined in on the scoring action by banking two points in from the low post. Cheldelin took over the majority of the scoring during the Bulldogs' 19-point third stanza by dropping seven points. Chen chipped in a clutch bucket, while junior guard Selena Iriarte (Wilmington, CA) notched two points for the Maroon and Gray's 45-30 advantage at the start of the fourth.

Despite scoring only 11 points in the final quarter, the Bulldogs used enough aggressive play and critical shooting to stay on top. Cheldelin kicked off the fourth with a successful and-one play, followed by Ta'amu's pair of free-throws. Chen boasted a 3-for-4 mark from the charity stripe down the stretch, while A. Silver capped off the game by dropping two points from the line en route to a 58-51 victory.

Cheldelin was the most lucrative offensive weapon on the hardwood by scoring a game-high 17 points to go along with four rebounds. Farry was one point shy of a double-double with her nine-point, 12-rebound performance.

A. Silver led the bench in scoring with 13 points, which included a 7-for-8 stint from the line. In addition, she hauled in five rebounds and tallied one block.

The Bulldogs out-played the Poets in multiple categories, including rebounds, points off turnovers, points in the paint, and bench points.

Redlands (7-9, 4-3 SCIAC) returns home on Tuesday, January 26, for a 7:30 p.m. showdown against the Chapman University Panthers in Currier Gym.
