The University of Redlands track & field teams impressed with their depth and talent at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Multi-Dual No. 3 on Saturday. The fourth-ranked women defeated Whittier College, the University of La Verne, and Caltech, while the No. 7 men also swept the competition in an impressive outing.
In addition, the women finished at least first or second in 17 of the 19 events, while the men accomplished this feat in 15 events.
For the women, junior Jessica Fields (Las Vegas, NV) won both of her hurdle events. She fired off a winning time of 14.23 in the 100 Hurdles and earned a first-place mark of 1:01.77 in the 400 Hurdles. Senior Kara Romani (Sacramento, CA) joined her on the podium of the shorter race by taking third in 15.49.
First-year Annick Bangou (Redlands, CA) continued to shine in the sprints, as she posted career-best times in the 100 (12.33) and 200 (25.26), each for second place. First-year Courtney O'Neal (Atlanta, GA) also impressed in the 100 as she clocked a bronze-medal time of 12.49.
Sophomore Hanna Albrecht (Cottage Grove, OR), Bangou, junior Chyenne Kimble (Big Bear Lake, CA), and O'Neal joined talents to uncork the fastest 4x100 Relay time of the day at 47.71.
Furthermore, Redlands captured second-place times in the 400, 800, and 1500 Meters. First-year Ani Nitta (Wailuku, HI) ran a 1:01.34 in the single lap, as sophomore Desiree Cadena (San Jose, CA) fired off a time of 2:20.32 in the 800. Finally, senior Ellie Ramsey (Waterbury, VT) recorded one of two sub-five-minute times in the 1500 when she crossed the finish line in a career-best 4:57.12. Junior Karli Stichter (Tustin, CA) joined her among the top three by posting the fastest time of her career at 5:08.80.
Finally, junior Maria Ramirez (Orange, CA) capped off the distance runners' success with a second-place time of 18:13.91 in the 5000 Meters.
The 4x400 Relay of Albrecht, Kimble, Romani, and Fields put together an excellent race for second place in 4:05.75.
Redlands cleaned up in the field events by winning all but one of them. First, sophomore Bryanna Neagle (Las Vegas, NV) cleared a height of 5' 1" to win the High Jump while matching her career-best mark. Sophomore Claire Jamison (Louisville, CO) also prevailed in the Pole Vault by registering a mark of 10' 6". Romani reached a distance of 17' 2" to land atop the podium in the Long Jump, while Albrecht supplied a solid third-place mark of 16' 5 ¾'. Sophomore Brenna Dolen (Redlands, CA) added a winning leap of 36' 0" in the Triple Jump as well.
Junior Katie Gonzalez (San Gabriel, CA) won the Discus Throw (118' 4") and the Hammer Throw (146' 1"), as sophomore Caeli Havel (Pahrump, NV) contributed a second-place heave of 116' 1" in the Discus.
Finally, Romani (105' 2"), Kimble (93' 5"), and Dolen (91' 7") combined for big points in the Javelin by finishing second, third, and fourth, respectively. The trio also reached career-bests in a fine showing.
The men gained significant points in the 100 Meters, as sophomore Cooper Malerstein (Huntington Beach, CA), sophomore Anthony Razo (Pomona, CA), and senior Jason Gonsalves (Waltham, MA) finished second (11.08), third (11.32), and fourth (11.39), respectively. Senior Luke Bohlinger (Mercer Island, WA) fired off a winning time of 21.58 in the 200 Meters to display Redlands' sprinting talent.
The Bulldogs also impressed in the 800 Meters with a 1-2-3 finish. First-year Jamir Jones (Fairfield, CA) spearheaded the effort with his winning time of 2:01.41, while first-year Riley Lathrop (Honolulu, HI) and senior Benjamin Casey (Highland Park, IL) closely followed with respective times of 2:02.10 and 2:02.60.
Sophomore Tucker Cargile (Denver, CO) uncorked another first-place performance by completing the 1500 in 4:00.77. Senior Andrew Kargol (Aiea, HI) and sophomore Quentin Olive-Larson (Fort Collins, CO) put together strong finishes in the 3000 Steeplechase as well. Kargol fired off a gold-medal time of 10:07.40, as Olive-Larson finished second in 10:18.77.
In the 400 Hurdles, seniors John Pease (Fallbrook, CA) and Nick Burchett (Gold River, CA) joined forces for a sweet combination at first (54.96) and second (55.87), respectively. Pease's time registers as the fastest of his career.
The 4x100 Relay of Bohlinger, junior Maliq Champion (Beaumont, CA), sophomore Domanick Murray (Palm Springs, CA), and sophomore MJ Wheeler (St. Louis, MO) raced to a winning time of 42.16, while the 4x400 Relay of Cargile, Pease, first-year Donovan Prince (San Diego, CA), and junior Tyler Lufkin (Yucaipa, CA) uncorked a first-place mark of 3:20.86 for the Bulldogs' fastest time of the season.
The team continued its success in the field events, with senior Matthew Hayashi (Hacienda Heights, CA) winning two of the three throws. He topped the charts in the Shot Put with a heave of 46' 8" and finished first in the Discus Throw by reaching a distance of 136' 11". He also provided a second-place toss of 124' 8" in the Hammer Throw in a solid day. In addition, junior Alieu Corr (Banjul, Gambia) added three third-place results to the throws. Graduate student Nate Battisti (Seattle, WA) won the Javelin by uncorking a mark of 156' 7".
Finally, Wheeler and sophomore Mason Ferrer (Rancho Mirage, CA) teamed up in the Long Jump for first (22' 11") and second (21' 4 ¼"), respectively.
Redlands completes the multi-dual portion of the SCIAC season undefeated and looks forward to the SCIAC Championships, which take place on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, at Claremont-Mudd-Scirpps Colleges.
