Redlands Swimming & Diving Takes Second Place at Caltech Invitational

Both the men's and women's University of Redlands swimming & diving teams took second place at the two-day Caltech Invitational that featured three other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams this weekend. The men racked up 780.5 points, while the women notched 907.

On the men's side, the 400 Medley Relay comprised of junior Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA), sophomore Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA), senior Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CO), and first-year Blake Eddow (Corona, CA) touched the wall in second with a time of 3:33.05.

Eddow also medaled in the 200 IM, 200 Free, and 400 IM with solid times of 1:58.08, 1:43.46, 4:14.78 respectively. For the Bulldogs' first gold-medal finish of the day, junior Jack McCormick (Santa Rosa, CA) out-touched the competition by .30 seconds with a final time of 21.36 in the 50 Free.

In the 100 Breast, Forbes led the entire way with a first-place finish of 59.28. The Bulldogs' momentum carried into the next event, as sophomore Derrick Garcia (Orinda, CA) registered a time of 51.50 to earn second place in the 100 Fly.

In his second relay of the day, Ayers joined McCormick, first-year Jack Forsythe (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), and junior Rafael Zasas (Johannesburg, South Africa) in the 200 Free and earned first place with a quality mark of 1:25.99. That performance was followed up by junior Jordan Convery (Fairview, OR), Forbes, Skinner, and McCormick placing first in the 200 Medley with a 1:35.95 time.

The Maroon and Gray showcased their speed in the 100 Free, as Ayers and Zasas went 1-2 with times of 46.38 and 47.18, respectively.

The men finished the day on top with a first-place effort from Eddow, Zasas, Forsythe, and Ayers in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:08.00.

For the women, senior Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL), and sophomores Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA), Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), and Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) began the day in impressive fashion with a first-place showing in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:59.65. First-year Leila Alejos (Portland, OR), junior Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA), sophomore Mary Tanouye (Kiel, WI), and first-year Gaby Hayon (Westlake Village, CA) also added points by posting a time of 4:09.87.

Hayon went on to take first place in the 500 Free with a time of 5:19.34, while senior Taylor Cadile (San Jose, CA) took third with a time of 5:22.96. Nakagawa also received medalist honors after securing a time of 24.84 in the 50 Free. She followed that performance up with a second-place time of 59.78 in the 100 Back.

In the 100 Breast, Hagenbaumer led the entire way as she touched the wall first in 1:06.28.

Setlich, Alejos, Parenti, and Nakagawa represented Redlands with a second-place finish in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:41.37. Alejos, Tanouye, Setlich, and sophomore Hanna Parker (Seattle, WA), followed up with another second-place time of 1:50.97 in the 200 Medley Relay. In Parenti's only individual performance of the day, she earned medalist honors in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:10.64.

In the 100 Free, Setlich made up ground in the final stretch to earn second place with a time of 54.62.

In the final race of the day for the women, Parenti, Setlich Alejos, and Hayon rounded out the meet with a second-place time of 3:43.80 in the 400 Free Relay.

On the diving board, senior Sami Scarano (Boulder, CO) claimed first place with a score of 204.65 off the 1-Meter board.

Redlands returns to the pool on Saturday, January, 4, in a dual-meet at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 11 a.m.
