Bulldog Men Take Third, Redlands Women Finish Fourth at SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships

The University of Redlands swimming teams completed the four-day Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships on a high note with solid times on Sunday at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.  The Bulldog men distanced themselves from the remainder of the standings with a third-place total of 588 points, which put them more than 100 points ahead of the next team.  The Maroon and Gray women earned 479.5 points to take fourth place.

For the men, the highlight of the evening session came in the 100 Free, as senior Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) and first-year Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA) went 1-2 in their All-SCIAC performance.  Bauer touched the wall in 45.47 to win the event, while Ayers quickly followed in 45.48.  During the consolation final, junior Carson Brett (Exeter, CA) fired off a third-place time of 46.52 as well.

First-year Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) impressed in the 200 Breast with his time of 2:03.71, which landed him just off the podium in fourth place.  In addition, junior Kyle Jackson (Naperville, IL) and sophomore Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA) collected key points with their 1-2 showing in the consolation final with respective times of 2:09.11 and 2:09.27. 

Furthermore, first-year Derrick Garcia (Orinda, CA) touched the wall in 1:55.18 for third place in the "B" final of the 200 Fly, as first-year Anders Stenfjord (Shoreline, WA) quickly followed in fifth with a mark of 1:56.22.

Finally, the Bulldogs' exciting meet ended with an outstanding effort in the 400 Free Relay that resulted in the silver medal.  Carson, senior Lucas Ulmer (Camas, WA), Ayers, and Bauer combined their talents for second place with a time of 3:03.01.

The Redlands women gained another All-SCIAC result from senior Wendy McAleer (Simi Valley, CA), who finished third in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:06.27.  First-year Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) and sophomore August Key (Albuquerque, NM) joined her in the final and registered respective marks of 2:09.89 and 2:10.68 for seventh and eighth.

Sophomore Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA) and junior Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL) added quality times in the 200 Breast.  Cano touched the wall in 2:23.91 for fifth place and Hagenbaumer went 2:24.27 for sixth.

The meet concluded with the Maroon and Gray's 400 Free Relay of first-year Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), first-year Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA), Key, and McAleer leaving it all in the pool to earn fifth place with a time of 3:36.34.

Redlands now awaits the NCAA's announcement on possible selections to the NCAA Division III Championships.
