U of R Swimming & Diving Teams Sweep La Verne in SCIAC Opener

Under pristine conditions at the Thompson Aquatic Center, the University of Redlands men's and women's swimming & diving teams cruised to victories over the University of La Verne in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldog women won by a score of 197-77, while the Redlands men earned a 230-49 victory.

Overall, Redlands captured 27 first-place showings and turned in 24 second-place performances in a fine outing.

The women's 200 Medley Relay of first-years Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA), and Mary Tanouye (Kiel, WI), and sophomore Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA) cruised to a first-place time of 1:54.31 to start things off well for the Bulldogs.   

In the 1000 Free, first-year Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ) stopped the clock in 12:02.69 to finish second, while sophomore Cassy Hauserman (South Elgin, IL) placed third in 12:15.48.

As action progressed to the sprints, senior IvyLee Senn (Novato, CA) kicked off her final conference campaign with a first-place showing in the 200 Free with a time of 2:05.15.

The Maroon and Gray shined in the 100 Back, as first-years Courtney Prefontaine (Laguna Niguel, CA) and Emily Heaston (Corona, CA) recorded top-three finishes. Prefontaine finished second in 1:05.63, while Heaston took third with a mark of 1:05.75.

After the Bulldogs secured all points in the 100 Breast, first-year Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) won the 50 Free with a time of 25.93. In the 100 Freestyle, the Maroon and Gray dominated with a sweep that was led by a 55.94 time from Setlich.  Cano and first-year Grace Falk (Phoenix, AZ) completed the impressive showing with respective times of 56.55 and 58.11.

The momentum continued with top-three sweeps in the 200 Back and the 200 Breast. Nakagawa, and first-years Katherine Neri (Palm Harbor, FL) and Anna O'Meara (Clovis, CA) fired off medalist times in the 200 Back, while first-year Sarah Martin (Tualatin, OR), junior Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL), and Southmayd led the 200 Back.

Senior Victoria Berardi (Chula Vista, CA) uncorked a second-place time of 6:08.35 in the 500 Freestyle, as senior Wendy McAleer (Simi Valley, CA) won the 100 Fly with a time of 1:00.28.

The Bulldogs registered another sweep in the 200 Individual Medley, with Cano pacing the trio with her first-place time of 2:17.31. Nakagawa added to her hardware of the day by taking second (2:19.04), while first-year Verenice Tapia (Napa, CA) completed the podium appearances with a time of 2:25.75.

The women finished out their strong meet by winning the 400 Free Relay in 3:53.10.  Parenti, Hagenbaumer, Neri, and Senn joined forces for the stellar performance.

On the one-meter diving board, first-year Erica Schickerling (Arlington Heights, CA) captured a winning score of 156.75 as the only Bulldog competitor.

On the men's side, Redlands set the tone early with a winning time of 1:39.17 in the 200 Medley Relay.  Sophomores John Nelson (Parker, CO) and Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA) and first-years Derrick Garcia (Orinda, CA) and Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA) combined talents as a formidable quartet.  They touched the wall less than a second ahead of the Bulldogs' "B" team.

First-year Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) never looked back in the 1000 Free, as he won the race in 10:13.68, which was more than 30 seconds ahead of the next swimmer.

Redlands captured a top-four sweep in the 200 Free, as junior Carson Brett (Exeter, CA) led the charge with a time of 1:50.48 to finish first. Senior Jack Ivey (Albuquerque, NM), junior Bryce Hurick (Exeter, CA), and first-year Tanner Gish (La Canada, CA) added their sub-two-minute showings to the impressive race for the Maroon and Gray.

Nelson and first-year Anders Stenfjord provided a 1-2 punch in the 100 Back with respective times of 56.14 and 56.71.

The Bulldogs earned top-two finishes in the 100 Breast and 200 Fly before sweeping the 50 Free. During the shortest sprint, senior Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) led the way with a time of 22:00. Bauer kept up his strong day with another first-place time of 48.42 in the 100 Freestyle to pace another Redlands 1-2-3 performance.

Jansen and sophomore Jordan Convery (Fairview, OR) offered another top-two finish in the 500 Free with times of 4:59.06 and 4:59.32, respectively.

Garcia's medalist finish highlighted the 100 Fly, as he touched the wall in 54.23 for the gold.   The 200 IM saw another outstanding result for the Maroon and Gray, with first-year Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) taking charge in 2:01.35 for first place.

The men closed out the successful meet with two quality quartets in the 400 Free Relay.  First, Brett, Hurick, Gish, and Convery joined forces to take home the top prize in 3:22.86, while Ivey, senior Aidan Coon (New York, NY), first-year Jacob Harvill (Alamo, CA), and Jansen finished second in 3:27.61.

On the boards, junior Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) and sophomore Max Spiegel (Englewood, CO) captured key points with a pair of 1-2 finishes. Miner earned 258.90 points for first place on the three-meter board while also winning the one-meter competition with a score of 277.75.  Spiegel registered tallies of 228.80 and 226.20 for a pair of silvers.

The Bulldogs continue SCIAC competition on Saturday, November 17, when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for a 10:30 a.m. meet.
