The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams headed to Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce for the first of four days of competition in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships on Wednesday. With stellar results, the Bulldog men sit in first place with 148 points, while the Maroon and Gray women own 88 points for fourth place.
Highlighting the big day, sophomore Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) earned a whopping 520.30 points for a new school record in the three-meter diving competition. This outstanding performance also lauded him second place in the standings for All-SCIAC honors. First-Year Max Spiegel (Englewood, CO) impressed in his SCIAC Championship debut with a fourth-place score of 462.10 as well.
In addition, all four of Redlands' A relays broke into the Bulldogs' all-time top-10 lists with blistering results in the pool. The women's 800 Free Relay of first-year Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA), junior IvyLee Senn (Novato, CA), sophomore Taylor Cadile (San Jose, CA), and senior Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA) uncorked a time of 7:51.20 for the sixth-fastest in Redlands history. While shaving off more than 20 seconds from its seed time, the quartet finished in fourth place.
The women's 200 Medley Relay of Senn, sophomore Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL), junior Wendy McAleer (Simi Valley, CA), and senior Olivia Rock (Boulder, CO) touched the wall in sixth place with a time of 1:50.33 to break into the Redlands top-10 list at eighth.
For the men, the 800 Free Relay of senior Brian Wright (Kent, WA), first-year Rafael Zasas (Johannesburg, South Africa), junior Jack Ivey (Albuquerque, NM), and junior Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) put together a fourth-place showing with a time of 6:53.85, which was a seven-second improvement over the quartet's seed time. Furthermore, this Bulldog relay now ranks eighth in school history.
Finally, Redlands' 200 Medley Relay also impressed with a top-10 all-time result. First-years John Nelson (Parker, CO) and Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA), and sophomores Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CO) and Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA) registered a sixth-place time of 1:34.77 to rank eighth among the Bulldogs' best.
The SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships continue on Thursday, February 22, beginning with preliminaries at 9 a.m.
