The University of Redlands men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed in day two of the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce on Thursday. With 235 points through the half-way mark, the Bulldog women sit in third place, while the men own 210 points to remain in fourth place.
Freshman Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) set the tone early with his second-place finish in the three-meter diving competition by accumulating 477.90 points. In addition to earning All-SCIAC honors for his top-three showing, he qualifies for the NCAA Regional Diving Championships, which will take place on Friday, February 24, and Saturday, February 25, at Grinnell College (IA).
For the women, senior Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA) won the 200 Individual Medley for the second time in her career for another All-SCIAC honor. She touched the wall ahead of the competition in 2:05.71 for an NCAA "B" cut.
Redlands gained additional success in the diving competition, as senior Miko Mallari (Palo Alto, CA) amassed 419.20 points on the three-meter board to finish fourth, while junior Payden Daly (Portland, OR) earned sixth with 319.20 points.
Highlighting the men's swimming results, junior Brian Wright (Kent, WA) won the consolation final of the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.32, after senior Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) took third in the consolation final of the 500 Free with a time of 4:42.61.
The 200 Free Relay of sophomore Lucas Ulmer (Camas, WA), sophomore Joe Widuch (Naperville, IL), freshman Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA), and sophomore Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) put together a time of 1:25.05 to finish sixth. Freshmen Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CA), Kyle Jackson (Naperville, IL), Carson Brett (Exeter, CA), and senior Will Tyrrell (Portland, OR) joined forces for a third-place time of 1:27.12 in the consolation final of this relay.
For the women, junior Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA) won the consolation final of the 50 Free with a time of 24.41, while freshman Taylor Cadile (San Jose, CA) collected critical points for the Bulldogs by taking third in the consolation final of the 500 Free with a time of 5:12.90.
Finally, the 200 Free Relay of Cadile, Waddell, freshman Claire Napier (Alamo, CA), and Jaques combined forces in the final, women's race of the night to finish fourth with a time of 1:38.43.
The excitement of the SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships continues Friday, February 17, with the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, and 400 Medley Relay.
