The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams took on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meet at the Thompson Aquatic Center amidst snow-capped mountains and beautiful sunshine. Despite a valiant effort, the Bulldogs came up short in the final tally, with the women falling by a score of 54-186 and the men suffering a 61-178 defeat.
Senior Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA) recorded the Maroon and Gray's sole first-place finish when she out-touched the competition in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:10.59.
Juniors Olivia Rock (Boulder, CO) and Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA) each registered a second-place time in their respective events. Waddell posted a time of 1:59.87 in the 200 Free as one of only two sub-two-minute showings in the race, while Rock impressed in the 100 Free with her time of 57.53.
In addition, junior Claire Stuhr (Portland, OR) recorded a third-place time of 4:49.57 in the 400 Individual Medley, while senior Danielle Miller (Hood River, OR) touched the wall in 2:16.99 for third place in the 200 Back.
The women finished strong by taking second in the 400 Free Relay, as Jaques, senior Cassidy Cramton (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), freshman Claire Napier (Alamo, CA), and Waddell joined forces for a time of 3:45.32.
In diving, senior Jessica Kolsky (Red Wing, MN) earned a fourth-place score of 240.60 on the one-meter board to highlight the Bulldogs' results.
For the men, sophomore Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) and senior Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) uncorked second-place times in the 100 Free and 500 Free, respectively. Bauer was one of three swimmers to post a sub-50-second mark by touching the wall in 49.16. Bugna put together a solid showing with his time of 4:51.39 as the only Redlands representative among the top five in the 500 Free.
Furthermore, junior Henry Stuckenschmidt (Fresno, CA) tallied a third-place time of 17:47.01 in the 1650 Free, while Bauer took third in the 200 Free (1:51.60). Junior Brian Wright (Kent, WA) added a quality mark of 22.52 in the 50 Free to finish third, as well.
The Bulldogs completed the meet on a high note with Wright, Bugna, freshman Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA), and Bauer teaming up for a second-place finish in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:15.98.
Finally, freshman Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) provided two second-place performances in the diving competition. He tallied a score of 254.35 on the three-meter board, before earning 260.86 points on the one-meter.
Redlands heads to Whittier College on Saturday, January 28, for a 10:30 a.m. SCIAC showdown with the Poets.
