Redlands Swimmers Shine at Bulldog Pentathlon

The University of Redlands swimmers took to the pool for their season-opening competition at the Thompson Aquatic Center, participating in the Bulldog Pentathlon.  Freshman Zack Amendola (Palos Heights, IL) impressed for the Bulldogs, as he placed first in the men's event, while sophomore Claire Stuhr (Portland, OR), freshman Kate Canfield (Naperville, IL), and junior Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA) finished second, third, and fourth, respectively, in the women's standings.

While taking on Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foes Chapman University and Whittier College, all Bulldog swimmers competed in 100 yards of each stroke before swimming one last time in the individual medley.  The final results are based on an aggregate time for each swimmer, with the overall fastest mark taking the top prize for men and women.

Amendola kicked off his Bulldog career with an outstanding day that culminated in a total time of 4:34.14.  He dominated the competition with winning marks in three of the five races.  He touched first in the 100 Free with a time of 48.83, while blasting the competition in the 100 Breast by a winning mark of 1:01.43.  He also reigned supreme in the 100 IM by touching the wall in 54.97.

Junior Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) tallied a third-place time of 4:47.03, while junior Will Tyrrell (Portland, OR) quickly followed by clocking in at 4:49.19.  Bugna uncorked a mark of 54.11 in the 100 Fly, while Tyrrell impressed with his 100 Free time of 49.99 and his 100 Back performance of 55.04.

Sophomore Brian Wright (Kent, WA) added a 4:49.41 showing to finish fifth overall.  He fired off a time of 56.61 in the 100 Fly to go along with a solid effort in the 100 Free at 51.10.

For the women, Stuhr put together a total time of 5:19.99 with her best showings coming in the 100 Fly (1:01.40) and 100 Free (57.50).

Canfield impressed in her first meet at Redlands with an aggregate time of 5:22.22, which included a first-place effort of 1:01.49 in the 100 Back.

Finally, Rivers rounded out the top Bulldogs with her five-race total of 5:24.11.  She won the 100 Breast competition with a time of 1:11.57.
