The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams traveled to Orange on Saturday to square off against host Chapman University and the University of La Verne in the final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) head-to-head meet of the 2014-15 season. The Bulldogs topped both opponents, with the men prevailing by scores 184-86 over the Leopards and 205-72 against the Panthers, and the women earning a 189-108 victory over La Verne and a 197-100 win over Chapman.
The Maroon and Gray notched multiple first-place performances against one or both opponents. Among the top showings for the Bulldog men, sophomore Will Tyrrell (Portland, OR) and freshman Corey Winter (Ripon, CA) teamed up for a one-two sweep in the 100 Back by touching the wall in successive order at 54.67 and 56.37 seconds.
In addition, senior Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL) touched the wall in 1:57.20, while sophomore Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) quickly followed in 1:59.40 to come away with the top-two finishes in the 200 Fly. Depew also cruised to victories in the 200 Back (1:59.09) and the 100 Fly (51.48).
Senior David Sekula (LaGrange, IL) shined in the 500 Free by out-touching all competitors with a time of 5:01.84.
Furthermore, Winter and freshman Brian Wright (Kent, WA) combined efforts in the 200 Individual Medley for first (2:02.64) and second (2:03.12) place, respectively, against both opponents.
The 200 Free Relay of senior Eric LoPrete (Beaverton, OR), junior Patrick Fink (San Pedro, CA), Wright, and junior Nelson Glendinning (Philadelphia, PA) prevailed against all others by completing the race in 1:27.96.
As for the diving, sophomore Miko Mallari (Palo Alto, CA) earned quality points for the Bulldogs with his strong showings on both boards. He amassed 186.15 points on the one-meter before tallying 162.05 on the three-meter for winning performances against La Verne and second-place finishes against Chapman.
The Redlands women dominated the 200 IM by registering a top-three sweep against both foes, with sophomore Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA) leading the way with her first-place time of 2:12.45. Senior Haley Thiltgen (San Diego, CA) and freshman Rachel Haney (Redmond, OR) quickly followed in 2:17.26 and 2:18.13, respectively.
In addition, freshman Danielle Miller (Hood River, OR) won the 100 Back by touching the wall in 1:03.09, while freshman Emily Mabrouk (Aurora, IL) took home the gold in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:12.70.
Jaques uncorked a winning effort in the 100 Free (54.28), as senior Summer Harp (San Bernardino, CA) prevailed in the 500 Free (5:19.24). The women's top finishes also included freshman Claire Stuhr (Portland, OR) in the 200 Breast (2:30.71) and junior Lauren Robeznieks (Tigard, OR) in the 100 Fly (1:00.92).
Finally, the 200 Free Relay of sophomore Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA), Harp, freshman Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA), and Robeznieks unleashed a winning performance in 1:41.40.
On the diving boards, sophomore Jessica Kolsky (Red Wing, MN) put up quality numbers with a score of 218.90 to win the one-meter against La Verne and take second against Chapman. She repeated her finishes on the three-meter by earning a score of 212.80.
The Bulldogs look forward to competing in the SCIAC Championships on Thursday, February 19, through Sunday, February 22, in Commerce.
