Depew Takes Fifth in 400 IM at Day Two of NCAA Championships

On the second day of the NCAA Division III Championships, the University of Redlands male swimmers competed and performed well, building on Wednesday's impressive results in Indianapolis, IN.

Junior standout Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL) once again registered phenomenal performances, as after setting the school record (3:53.77) in the 400 IM during the prelims and qualifying for the finals, Depew finished in fifth place (3:54.53) in the 400 IM championship race, garnering All-America honors in the process. 

Coming into the event, Depew was seeded 22nd overall in the field and qualified as an optional competitor with his previous season-best mark of 4:01.77.

Also competing on Thursday was senior David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA) in the 200 Free.  Ortyn qualified in the 200 Free as an optional competitor, registering a seed time during the season of 1:41.01 for 37th-best.  Ortyn swam well in the prelims on Thursday, uncorking a season-best mark of 1:40.92 and improved upon his seed, taking 33rd overall.

The Bulldogs return to the pool tomorrow when both Depew and Ortyn compete in the 200 Fly.  Ortyn enters the event with the 11th-fastest seed time (1:49.53), while Depew qualifies as the 19th-fastest swimmer in the event (1:50.38).

In addition, junior Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA) returns to the pool for the Maroon and Gray women as she will take part in the 100 Back as an optional competitor.  She enters the event with the 34th-best time of 57.77.
