The University of Redlands swimming and diving teams traveled to Whittier College on Saturday afternoon and garnered split results, with the Bulldog women winning, 127-114, and the Bulldog men falling, 111-116. In the first scoring meet of the New Year, the Maroon and Gray received solid performances from a number of individuals in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meet.
The Bulldog women started the meet off with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The quartet of sophomore Bailey Clem (Napa, CA), senior Jackie Miranda (Banning, CA), freshman Leah Bolin (Oshkosh, WI), and freshman Cassidy Cramton (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) combined for a time of 2:00.09 in the relay.
Junior Summer Harp (San Bernardino, CA) excelled in the 1000 Free, blowing away the rest of the field with a first-place mark of 11:33.39. Sophomore Kaitlin Kehoe (San Marcos, CA) showed well in the same event, notching a third-place finish (11:50.88).
Sophomore Lauren Robeznieks (Tigard, OR) shined for Redlands in a couple of different events, touching the wall in first place in the 200 Free (2:00.98) and the 100 Fly (1:01.18). In addition, freshman Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA) finished first in the 200 IM (2:17.64) and second in the 100 Back (1:05.88). Also in the 200 IM, junior Haley Thiltgen (San Diego, CA) tallied a second-place mark (2:18.48).
Elsewhere, junior Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA) nabbed top honors in the 50 Free with a time of 25.54 and finished second best in the 100 Free by touching the wall in 56.77.
In the 500 Free, the U of R took second and third place with junior Rachel Weinstein (Oak Harbor, WA) finishing in 5:36.09, while Cramton touched the wall in 5:43.08.
Closing out the day in the pool for the women, the foursome of Thiltgen, freshman Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA), Robeznieks, and Lukes won the 200 Free Relay with a season-best time of 1:41.89.
In the diving events, freshman Jessica Kolsky (Red Wing, MN) took the top spot in the one-meter event (193.55), while sophomore Akari Matsumoto (Redmond, WA) finished in third (1:57.85). Matsumoto went on to finish in second place in the three-meter event (192.70).
On the men's side, the foursome of junior Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL), freshman Luke Marshall (Lake Oswego, OR), senior David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA), and sophomore Nelson Glendinning (Philadelphia, PA) combined for a second-place time (1:41.52) to open the meet in the 200 Medley Relay.
Depew swam the 1000 Free not long after and uncorked a first-place time of 10:19.94, while Ortyn won the 200 Free with a mark of 1:46.52.
In the 50 Free, senior Brent Reed (Dublin, CA) and Glendinning took second and fourth with times of 22.15 and 23.08, respectively.
Freshman Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) registered the top time in the 200 IM for the Maroon and Gray, clocking in a mark of 2:04.51, while Marshall touched the wall in third place with a mark of 2:06.14. Bugna also swam well in the 100 Back, registering a second-place time of 59.03.
Elsewhere, Reed nabbed top honors in the 100 Fly with a time of 54.83, while a number of different Bulldogs recorded second-place marks. Ortyn finished runner-up in the 100 Free (49.80), junior Eric LoPrete (Beaverton, OR) took second in the 500 Free (5:02.72), and Marshall registered a second-place finish in the 100 Breast (1:04.15).
Finally, in the 200 Free Relay, the quartet of senior Nikolai Paloni (Greenwich, CT), Glendinning, senior Spencer Peugh (Alamo, CA), and Reed combined for a first-place time of 1:30.45, out-touching the Poets by 0.15 seconds.
In the diving events, freshman Alec Haberman (Tustin, CA) excelled, winning the three-meter event (113.85) while taking second in the one-meter event (119.00).
The U of R returns to action on Wednesday, January 15 in a non-scoring meet against Whitman College (WA). The Bulldogs then continue their SCIAC campaign on Saturday, January 18 at a Tri-Meet against Cal Lutheran University and the University of La Verne. The meet is set to begin in Thousand Oaks at 10 a.m.
