Redlands Men's Water Polo Finishes Third in SCIAC Tournament, Heads to WWPAs

The University of Redlands men's water polo team battled it out at the 2010 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, earning a third-place finish behind a 24-4 rout of Caltech and a 10-9 sudden-death overtime victory against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

Redlands dropped the semifinal showdown against eventual conference champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by a heartbreaking 8-9 decision.

By combining the dual match showings with the tournament results, the Bulldogs place second in the SCIAC standings. Despite owning the best conference record at 8-2, Redlands sits behind CMS because of a weighted point-system for the tournament, with the winner receiving nine points.

The Bulldogs (18-14, 8-2 SCIAC) look forward to competing in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships later this week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Redlands enters the event as the eighth seed and faces off against ninth-seeded Whittier College (13-18, 7-10) at 10: 20 a.m. on Friday at Santa Clara University.

The Poets recently came in second at the SCIAC Tournament, emerging in the championship game as the seventh seed.

Redlands holds a 2-0 advantage over Whittier, with its latest victory coming in a 9-8 overtime thriller on Oct. 30.
