2023 University of Redlands Men's Tennis Schedule

REDLANDS, Calif. – University of Redlands Head Men's Tennis Coach Pete Yellico announced his 2023 Schedule Wednesday, which includes 18 dual matches along with an appearance at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, CA.  Fifteen of the eighteen dual matches will be played inside the newly renovated Verdieck Tennis Center and another three on the road within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play against California Lutheran University, Whittier College and Pomona-Pitzer.     

The Bulldogs have a pair of exhibitions against College of the Desert and Point Loma Nazarene and will begin their spring portion of the schedule with a home matchup against Brandeis University on Thursday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m.

Redlands will face twelve teams ranked inside the Top-40 within the ITA Division III Preseason National Rankings, three within the Top-5, another five ranging from No. 15-No. 20 and five more from No. 20-No. 40.  These teams include:

No. 4 Tufts, No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer, No. 14 Bowdoin, No. 15 Amherst, No. 16 Caltech, No. 18 Mary Washington, No. 27 Brandeis, No. 36 Occidental, No. 37 Christopher Newport, No. 39 UC Santa Cruz, and No. 40 Chapman.

In 2022 the Maroon and Grey went 9-9, 3-4 SCIAC and finished the year ranked No. 26 nationally in Division III. Stefan Hester (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) was the lone All-SCIAC performer as he was named to the 2nd Team, and he will return for his junior season.

During their fall schedule the Bulldogs competed at the ITA Division III West Regionals. Doubles team Jack Mattox (Mercer Island, WA) and Ollie Richards (Whitstable, England) made it to the Round of 16.

Also reaching the Round of 16 were pairs Bryce Keim (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Nils Plutat (Sauerlach, Germany) and Ting Hao Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan) and Hester. Hao Hsu and Hester made it to the Semi-Finals. 

In the singles draw Keim and Hester each advanced to the Round of 16 with Hester making it all the way to the Semi-Finals before losing to the No. 2 seed.

  • Brandeis (Feb. 23, 12-6, No. 23): Last played then the No. 21 Judges in 2019 at home when they lost 8-1.
  • Linfield (Feb. 25, 3-12): The previous meeting between the Bulldogs and Wildcats was in 2016 when Redlands got the sweep 9-0.
  • Mary Washington (Feb. 28, 15-6, No. 18): Earned the win over the Eagles last season 5-4.
  • Pacific Coast Doubles (Mar. 3-5): First appearance.
  • Vassar (Mar. 8, 10-9, No. 17): The Bulldogs hold a 2-0 all-time record and won last season's matchup 8-1.
  • Christopher Newport (Mar. 10, 10-9, No. 37): The Bulldogs have won all seven meetings between the two programs, including a 6-3 home win last season.
  • Bowdoin (Mar. 14, 16-6, No. 14): The Bulldogs have struggled with the Polar Bears, losing five-of-six. Their last meeting was in 2017 at home, an 8-1 loss. Their lone win was in 2009, 6-3. 
  • Whitman (Mar. 17, 7-13): The Bulldogs have spilt the six all-time meetings winning the last matchup 9-0 last season.
  • Amherst (Mar. 18, 11-8, No. 15): The Bulldogs lost 6-3 in 2022.
  • Tufts (Mar. 21, 20-3, No. 4): Lost 8-1 to the Jumbos in 2022.
  • Cal Lutheran (Mar. 24, 9-9, No. 38): Won 7-2 last season against the Kingsmen.
  • Grinnell (Mar. 25, 14-12, No. 17): No prior meeting between the two programs.
  • UC Santa Cruz (Mar. 29, 6-9): Were able to sneak past the Banana Slugs last season 5-4.
  • Whittier (Mar. 31, 3-13): Eased past the Poets 7-2 in 2022.
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Apr. 1, 27-7, No.5): Lost 8-1 in 2022 to the Stags.
  • Caltech (Apr. 4, 14-7, No. 16): Bulldogs have handled the all-time series 14-2 but lost 7-2 in 2022. 
  • Pomona-Pitzer (Apr. 8, 16-11, No. 9): Lost to the Sagehens 9-0 last season.
  • Chapman (Apr. 14, 6-11): Beat the Panthers 8-1 in 2022.
  • Occidental (Apr. 15, 7-9): Lost to the Tigers 6-3 last season.
