The No. 21 University of Redlands men's tennis team battled it out against No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Friday's semifinal of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament in Claremont. Despite earning a slight lead through the doubles, the Bulldogs fell short in a 2-5 decision.
Sophomore Brysl Libao (Redlands, CA) and junior Brad Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) took care of business at the No. 1 doubles slot with a solid 8-3 result. First-years Andrew Yip (Honolulu, HI) and Thomas Reznik (Belmont, CA) kept things rolling for the Maroon and Gray with an 8-6 victory on the No. 2 court. After facing an early deficit, the No. 3 tandem of senior Chase Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) and junior Andrew Leahy (Claremont, CA) battled back but came up short in a tight 6-8 loss.
In singles, Libao and Leahy won their first sets to hold onto Redlands' momentum.
However, the Sagehens managed to capture straight-set victories at Nos. 4, 1, and 3 for a solid 4-2 lead. Although Libao and Leahy were just one game from winning their respective matches, Pomona-Pitzer closed out the match at No. 6 to send the Bulldogs home with a disappointing loss.
Redlands (13-6) holds out hope for a possible at-large bid and/or individual selections to the NCAA Division III Championships.
