USNA Court No. 1 Named for Taylor Hunt's Great-Uncle at Inaugural Joe Hunt Invitational

Graduate student Taylor Hunt (Seattle, WA) of the University of Redlands men's tennis team competed in the inaugural Joe Hunt Invitational, which was named for his great-uncle, on Friday, September 25, at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

After losing the first match to Michael Sienko of Army West Point, Taylor Hunt recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Stephen Ong of Temple University (PA).  Unfortunately, he was sidelined by an injury prior to Saturday's matches and was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

However, Taylor and his extended family joined Navy personnel in honoring Joe Hunt with the official dedication of court No. 1 as Joe Hunt Court at the USNA tennis facility on Sunday.

According to the athletic web site, Joe Hunt was tabbed the Navy Academy's most accomplished men's tennis player after winning the 1941 national singles championship.  Following graduation, his tennis career continued at the professional level as highlighted by winning the USTA National Championship and becoming the No. 1 player in the country and fifth-ranked in the world.

Prior to competition, Taylor Hunt reflected on the significance of the weekend by saying, "On behalf of my family it is a great honor to be here. It's a great privilege to represent my great-uncle so that he is not forgotten and that all that he accomplished can be remembered for the ages."
