After dominating the Sagehens of third-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Wednesday night's semifinal, the top-seeded University of Redlands men's soccer team has earned the right to host the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament Championship match. The Bulldogs will welcome Cal Lutheran University to Farquhar Field on Saturday, November 4, for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
The winner of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament will punch its ticket to the NCAA Division III Championships as the automatic qualifier.
The Bulldogs worked their way to the championship game with a 14-3-2 overall record and 12-0-2 tally in conference action. On Wednesday, Redlands utilized three different goal-scorers in senior forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR), sophomore forward Antony Chonga (San Diego, CA), and freshman forward Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) in the semifinal over Pomona-Pitzer.
Chonga now paced the Maroon and Gray with nine goals, while senior midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) leads the squad with 20 points.
Cal Lutheran arrives at the championship game with an overall record of 12-4-2 and a SCIAC mark of 9-3-2. The Kingsmen triumphed against Chapman, 3-1, in Wednesday evening's semifinal. Cal Lutheran's Joey Arnold scored first before Daniel Aguilar and Brandon Kearney notched second-half goals for the win. Arnold, Kearney, and Diego Ortega accounts for 24 of the team's 34 goals on the season.
Redlands holds a 1-0-1, head-to-head record over the Kingsmen. In the first meeting, the Bulldogs pulled off a 2-1 comeback win with goals from ChubbFertal and senior midfielder Alexander Knox (Seattle, WA). At Cal Lutheran, the teams battled through a 1-1 tie, as Redlands struck first with a header-goal from senior defender Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA) before CLU's Ortega notched the equalizer. After two scoreless overtime periods, the game remained at a 1-1 draw.
The SCIAC Championship policy for admission will be in place at Redlands and is as follows:
- All SCIAC faculty, staff, and students are free with proper school ID
- Children under 12 are FREE
- General Admission of $10.00 is charged for all adults
- General Admission of $5.00 for Seniors and Military
