No. 13 Men’s Soccer Stuck in 1-1 Stalemate with Cal Lutheran

The No. 13 University of Redlands men's soccer team traveled to Cal Lutheran University on Saturday for an afternoon Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) contest against the Kingsmen. Despite scoring first, the Bulldogs gave up a late goal in the second half to even the tally. Neither team could find the break-through in two overtime periods, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Senior goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) came up big time in the first 20 minutes of the game by making two saves to keep the Kingsmen off the board.

The Bulldogs got a burst of energy in the 24th minute, as junior forward Kayvon Parsa (West Hills, CA) and sophomore defender Matias Lazo-Fanning (Seattle, WA) fired off a shot each within seconds of one another.

This offensive spark extended into the 26th minute when senior forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR) chipped a high ball toward the box that found the head of senior defender Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA) for the 1-0 Redlands advantage.

Freshman midfielder Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) headed a shot on frame at the 35:40-mark in attempt to create a little cushion but the Cal Lutheran goalkeeper stopped it.

Through the majority of a physical second half, the Bulldogs continued to hold a 1-0 lead. However, the Kingsmen took advantage of a defensive breakdown and netted a score to tie it up in the 76th minute.

The teams fought hard for scoring chances in the final minutes of regulation, but the buzzer sounded with the score still knotted to force overtime.

Each team took one shot in the first extra period, with Collin ChubbFertal trying his head on an attempt but again the Kingsmen keeper made the save.

In the second overtime, Parsa owned the Bulldogs' best look towards goal but it went just high.

Through 110 minutes, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Bulldogs (11-3-2, 10-0-2 SCIAC) return home to Farquhar Field on Wednesday, October 25, to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 7 p.m.
