Senior forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR) added his name in the
annals of Bulldog men’s soccer for the second time this year,
contributing a goal in the University of Redlands’ 4-2
victory over the University of La Verne on Oct. 18.
Schunk scored the second goal of the match in the 49th minute of
action, putting the Bulldogs up 2-1 against the Leopards and
notching two points with the score. Those two points put Schunk at
126 for his career, which passed Adam Acosta ‘05’s
record of 125. Acosta also held the former program career goal
record of 50, which Schunk passed earlier this season at La
Verne.
Following the match, Head Coach Ralph Perez handed the new career
point record holder the ball that he scored the goal with in a
short postgame recognition ceremony at the middle of the pitch.
While Schunk’s record held great importance, the Bulldogs
moved closer to clinching the top seed for the conference
postseason tournament, keeping their undefeated run in conference
play for the 2008 season in tact.
Scoring opened in the 23rd minute when senior midfielder Bryan
Fakkema (Oak Harbor, WA) netted a goal from a feed by junior
midfielder Cale Rodriguez (Norwalk, CA). La Verne’s Hector
Lepe, however, responded two minutes later with a goal of his own,
tying the game at one.
Schunk scored the go-ahead goal on which senior forward Alex Parker
(Chula Vista, CA) notched the assist, but Lepe evened the score 10
minutes later with his second goal of the tilt.
On a corner kick opportunity, which was set up by Rodriguez, senior
midfielder Steve Chenes (Las Vegas, NV) uncorked a shot to the back
of the net to give Redlands the 3-2 advantage in the match’s
61st minute. Parker put the game out of reach with a goal at the
71-minute mark after junior defender Jeff Willey (Medina, WA)
played him a ball from mid field.
The Bulldogs held the shot advantage over the Leopards, firing off
31 to La Verne’s seven.
In goal, junior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) tallied one
save and allowed both Leopard scores. Austin Neiheiser picked up
the loss for La Verne, saving three shots and allowing all four
goals.
Redlands (10-4-1, 9-0-1 SCIAC) faces a crucial regional game on
Monday, Oct. 20 against the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz at
Farquhar Field at 7 p.m.
