Redlands Men’s Soccer Picks Up First Conference Win, Defeats Caltech 8-0

Senior forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR) equaled the University of Redlands men’s soccer career goal record this afternoon, netting his 49th and 50th career goals in an 8-0 win over Caltech.

His career goal mark ties that of Adam Acosta ’05, who compiled 50 goals from 2001 to 2004 as a Bulldog student-athlete.

Schunk connected on a cross by junior midfielder Cale Rodriguez (Norwalk, CA), scoring the match’s first goal in the 18th minute. Less than a minute later, senior forward Alex Parker (Chula Vista, CA) scored an unassisted goal, putting Redlands on top 2-0.

The Bulldogs blew the game open in the 55th minute as Schunk followed through on a pass by junior midfielder Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT) and found the back of the net. Gundersen found the feet of Parker seconds later, giving the maroon and gray a 4-0 advantage.

Scoring in the 69th minute, junior midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA) nabbed his second goal of the season.

Three student-athletes earned their first goals of the 2008 season. Sophomore midfielder Gilbert Flores (Woodlake, CA) put away a goal off of a pass from freshman midfielder Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) in the 79th minute, senior defender Sean Conway (Van Nuys, CA), a former placekicker for the football team, booted in his first career Redlands goal in the 80th minute while sophomore midfielder Ethan Low (Langley, WA) closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute off of a pass from freshman midfielder Jamie Griffin (Seattle, WA).

Redlands monopolized the shot advantage by a 59-1 margin, including 25 shots on goal. The team also held the corner kick advantage, 6-1.

All three Bulldog goalkeepers saw action. Junior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) saved the only shot he faced in 61 minutes of action while freshman goalkeeper Charles Pratt IV (Phoenix, AZ) and freshman goalkeeper Jason Smuckler (Woodland Hills, CA) played 12 and 15 minutes, respectively.

For the Beavers, Grayson Chadwich saved 10 shots and allowed two goals in the first half while Tyler Volkoff took over in the second half, surrendering six goals and saving six shots.

The men’s soccer team (2-4-1, 1-0-1 SCIAC) travels to the University of La Verne on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match against the Leopards.
