VENTURA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Golf team got their season underway this week during the CA State Intercollegiate at Olivas Links Golf Club. The Bulldogs finished 6th overall with a three-round total of 874 (289-296-289).
The Maroon and Grey were in 5th entering the final round and had an opportunity to chase down the University of La Verne (866) and Occidental College (859), but couldn't make up any ground as they would see Pomona-Pitzer (871) jump in front of them into 5th. They did however edge out California Lutheran University (881), Chapman University (893), Marymount University (893), and Westmont College (921).
Kyle Sharp (Laguna Beach, CA) led the Bulldogs finishing 11th, despite dropping four spots was able to shoot -2 under for the three rounds with a 214 (71-71-72). Joshua Fambro (Taos, NM), the 2021 SCIAC Athlete of the Year made a push in the final round improving three strokes to move him into a tie for 18th. He shot a 217 (72-74-71) moving up four spots in the leaderboard.
Freshman Ben Cowan (Orange, OH) had the biggest jump for UR finishing in a tie for 23rd after moving up 16 spots following a team low 69 in the final round. He posted a 220 (73-78-69). Jared Stone (American Canyon, CA) wasn't far behind in a tie for 29th combining for a 221 (73-75-73).
First years Jake Yim (Lake Oswego, OR) and Mario Dino (Denver, CO) battled with each other combining to move up five spots in the final standings with Yim in 49th and Dino in a tie for 50th. Yim totaled a 230 (73-84-72) and Dino posted a 231 (73-84-74).
Then to round out the scoring, senior Ryan Crema (Surrey, England) would finish with a 232 (83-76-73) improving each round that moved him into a tie for 52nd.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the event with an 833 (275-281-277) followed by Master's University with an 854 (283-288-283).
Redlands returns to the links next week on Monday-Tuesday, September 20-21 when they host the Bulldog Fall Invitational at Redlands Country Club.
