The No. 9 University of Redlands men's golf team gained one of seven at-large bids to the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships, as announced by the NCAA earlier today. The Bulldogs head to Nicholasville, Kentucky, to compete at Keen Trace Golf Club on May 14-17. The Bulldogs return to the national tournament for the first time as a team since 2015.
Redlands is one of three Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams to advance to the NCAA Championships. The No. 11 University of La Verne secured the conference's automatic bid by winning the conference championship, while No. 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges also gained an at-large selection.
Earlier this season, the Bulldogs finished second in the conference standings, just four strokes behind La Verne. First-year Kyle Sharp (Austin, TX) was tabbed the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year as a First-Teamer, while senior Alex Stroes (San Marcos, CA), junior Jake Hollander (Peterborough, NH), and senior Cade Lawson (Lake Oswego, OR) also earned First-Team honors. Junior Cameron Cooper (Seattle, WA) landed on the Second Team to place all five of the Bulldogs' top golfers among the best in the conference.
Regionally, the Bulldogs sit third behind Southwestern University (TX) and CMS. La Verne rounds out the top four in the West.
According to GolfStat, the Bulldogs own an adjusted scoring average of 74.03. The team recorded event wins at the Marymount Fall Invitational and the SCIAC Tournament No. 1.
Hosted by Transylvania University (KY), the NCAA team and individual champions will be determined by the lowest score through four rounds or upon conclusion of the last fully completed round. Redlands is one of 42 teams joining six individuals not on one of those teams selected to the national tournament. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams.
