Dynamic Duo Represents Redlands on All-SCIAC Men's Basketball Teams

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released its annual awards for men's basketball on Friday morning and they included junior forward David Menary (Grass Valley, CA) and senior guard Joey Sponheim (Redlands, CA) from the University of Redlands.  Menary represents the Bulldogs on the First Team, while Sponheim garnered Second-Team honors.

While earning All-SCIAC accolades for the second-straight season, Menary finished the conference campaign as the second-leading scorer with an average of 20.3 points per game. He also displayed efficiency by shooting the third-best percentage of 55.1% from the field. His consistency at the free-throw line led to a quality mark of 81.7%, which placed him fourth among the SCIAC. During the 2018-19 season, Menary put up three games with at least 30 points, including 33-point games in a 101-97 win over Occidental College and a 97-96 victory over Chapman University.

Sponheim remained in the SCIAC's top 10 in scoring throughout his senior campaign and finished the regular season in seventh with 16.9 points per game. As a threat from inside and outside, he knocked down 45.6% of his shots and 38.7% of his attempts from downtown. In a career-high, 40-point outing against Occidental, Sponheim went 12-for-17 from the field and 7-for-10 from beyond the arc while also hitting all but one of his 10 free-throws. One of his strongest all-around games of the year came in the 97-96 win over Chapman, as he notched a near double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds in addition to nabbing four steals.  This marks Sponheim's first All-SCIAC award.

As a talented duo, Menary and Sponheim combined for 48% of the team's points in the final four games of the regular season, which helped Redlands secure the No. 4 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
