REDLANDS, Calif. - The University of Redlands Football team returns to the gridiron this weekend, Saturday, October 8 at 7:05pm for their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener against California Lutheran University for the annual Smudge Pot Trophy Game.
The teams will be playing for the coveted Smudge Pot for the tenth time, with the Bulldogs hoping to secure it for the ninth-straight year.
Smudge Pot Trophy History
Beginning in 2012, the Smudge Pot Trophy is a perpetual trophy that celebrates the heritage and history of the citrus industries in San Bernardino and Ventura counties. The winner of the annual game between Cal Lutheran and Redlands is presented with the Smudge Pot, earning the honor to paint it in the respective school colors while hosting the trophy until the next meeting.

Week 4/5 Results
Redlands
The Bulldogs are coming off a bye week with their last contest occurring back on September 24 in a non-conference game against Claremont-M-S where they fell 25-21. In the loss the Maroon and Grey held leads at 7-0, 14-3, and 21-12. Redlands is still searching for their first win of 2022 as they sit at 0-4.
Redlands won the time of possession battle against the Stags at 32:10-27:50. They struggled to run the ball, averaging only 1.44 yards/rush, but Calel Olicia-Aramboles (Westfield, IN) averaged 7.57 yards/rush, running for 53 yards on seven carries, and posting the only zero in rushing yards lost.
Myles Herrera (Yucaipa, CA) went 16-for-25 with 108 yards and two touchdowns in the air along with 28 yards rushing. Michael Mindnich (Bellingham, WA) had a touchdown and 25 yards receiving, Graig Padgett (Steilacoom, WA) scored his first career touchdown, and leading receiver Evan Aguon (San Diego, CA) had seven catches for 35 yards.
On the defensive side Jacob Sega (Oceanside, CA) had a game-high nine tackles and Scott Tinsley (Capitola, CA) and Craig Hunter (Murrieta, CA) both had eight tackles. Jadin Michaels (Palm Springs, CA) had an interception and four tackles. Both of the Bulldogs sacks came courtesy of Dawson Brokman (Martinez, CA).
Cal Lutheran
The Kingsmen played during week five, as they made the trip to Whittier College where they shutout the Poets 45-0. CLU went 9-of-13 (69 percent) on third downs, totaled 420 yards of offense, allowed only 62 yards of offense at a 1.4 yard/play clip, threw for 152 yards, and rushed for 268 yards on 47 carries for an average of 5.7 yards/rush.
Cal Lutheran forced three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, while fumbling once, which they recovered, and throwing one interception.
Starting quarterback Nick Lasher went 9-for-15 for 113 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Hector Gonzalez relieved him and threw a touchdown.
Lasher was the team's leading rusher with 74 yards on only four carries. Isaiah Martin ran for a touchdown and carried the ball 14 times for 68 yards. CLU spread the ball around with ten players recording a carry.
Faizon Knight led them with three catches for 55 yards and one receiving touchdown. Between rushing and receiving, the Kingsmen had 18 different players with a rush attempt or reception.
Three players tied for a team-high three total tackles. They posted four sacks and five tackles for losses. CLU had four pass breakups on only 19 Whittier pass attempts and they blocked two kicks.
Series History
The Bulldogs have won eight-straight games against the Kingsmen dating back to 2012 when they lost 45-35 inside Ted Runner Stadium. In 2021 the Bulldogs blew out the Kingsmen 56-28. That game the Bulldogs were down 14-0 before going on a 56-14 run.
