Football Preview: University of Redlands vs. Claremont-M-S

REDLANDS, Calif. - The University of Redlands Football team heads into week four of their season with a home non-conference game at Ted Runner Stadium against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) this Saturday, September 24 with kickoff set for 7:05 p.m. The game will also be "Take a Kid to the Game" and "Tailgate with a Cop".

In partnership with the University of Redlands and Bulldog Athletics, the Redlands Police Department will be cooking up hot dogs and hamburgers at a family-friendly tailgate party on the Serrao Lawn, just outside of Ted Runner Stadium, at 4:30 p.m. this Saturday, September 24. Tailgate party attendees will enjoy a free hamburger or hot dog and will interact with police officers and University community members before watching the Redlands Bulldogs vs Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football game at 7 p.m.

All adults who accompany a child to the game will receive free admission because of their participation in the University of Redlands' Take a Kid to the Game Night. In addition to a youth tailgate football game, several other youth-related activities will take place, including a SWAT Obstacle Competition for prizes.

Be sure to stick around at halftime of the game for the chance to win one of several $250 team pizza parties! All teams (local, community, and U of R) are encouraged to wear their jerseys or some other unique shirt (like a tie-dye) to show team spirit. Teams must register to win.

All University personnel (staff and students) with Redlands ID will receive free admission to the game. For Take a Kid to the Game Night, all kids 18 and under will be admitted for free as well.

For more information, view the event flyer here. You can also visit the Tailgate with a Cop website at https://www.cityofredlands.org/pod/tailgate-cop.

Week 3 Results

Redlands

The Bulldogs come Saturday 0-3 after dropping their last game at Linfield University 21-3. The Bulldogs fell behind 7-0 with 5:48 left in the first quarter and never recovered. Their lone points came on a Vicente Garcia (Fontana, CA) 37-yard field goal with 1:33 left in the first.

The Bulldogs managed only four first downs, they were unable to convert any of their nine third down attempts, they had 84 yards of total offense, and had two turnovers (one interception and one fumble lost).

On the defensive side the Bulldogs did a great job, allowing only 366 total yards of offense and considering they were on the field for more than 40:00 minutes they held the Wildcats to only 4.8 yards per play and were able to control the running game, allowing only 2.7 yards per rush on 50 attempts. The defense also got into the backfield with seven tackles for losses (TFL) and two sacks.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

The Stags lost their road game at Whitworth 12-7 last weekend and currently sit at 1-1 after defeating Whittier College at home in their first contest.

In their road loss to the Pirates, the Stags opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown from Pre-Season All-American running back Justin Edwards :15 seconds into the second quarter.

After the Stags allowed a safety in the middle of the period, the Pirates further cut into the lead with a 43-yard field goal that sent the game to half with the Stags holding a 7-5 lead. CMS maintained this advantage through the third and the majority of the fourth until the Pirates scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:25 left in the game.

The Stags ran for 114 yards, but at only a 2.5 yards per rush clip. They also only threw the ball 12 times for 62 yards. The Stags' best player, Edwards, had 124 of their 148 yards from scrimmage. His yards came on a 5.4 yards per touch average where the rest of the team sat at 0.96 yards per attempt.

The Stags' defense did play well, recording eight TFLs, two sacks, and forced the only turnover of the game, an interception. They also had six players with five or more total tackles and seven players with a TFL.

Series History

The Bulldogs earned the road win in 2021 against CMS, 22-19, thanks to a game-winning touchdown with :20 seconds remaining. Overall, the Bulldogs have won two-in-a-row with their last loss coming in 2018, a home game in which they dropped 20-10.
