THE BULLDOGS

Last week: The University of Redlands football team captured the 2013 Smudge Pot Trophy with a 10-7 victory over Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, ending the Kingsmen's conference win-streak at 28 games. Amidst a defensive struggle, the Bulldogs stepped up with key stops throughout the game while limiting CLU to its lowest number of rushing yards this season with 114. Honorary Captains: President Ralph Kuncl and his wife, Nancy, serve as honorary captains prior to Saturday's Homecoming kick-off. They join the senior quartet of defensive back Nick Kido, wide receiver Taylor Irwin, tight end Daryl Andersen, and defensive lineman Daniel Kane at the center of the field for the pregame coin toss.

SCIAC AOW: It was announced on Wednesday that running back Curtis Tanquary was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for October 7-13. Tanquary led the Bulldogs to a 10-7 victory over Cal Lutheran in the annual Smudge Pot game on Saturday night, carrying the ball 29 times for a career-high 161 yards. He scored Redlands' only touchdown of the defensive battle against the Kingsmen. Tanquary registered big runs of 34 and 22 yards during each of the Bulldogs' scoring drives en route to leading the Maroon and Gray to its first win over CLU since 2007. VIEW THE RELEASE.

At the Helm: In his 26th year with the Bulldogs, Head Coach Mike Maynard consistently establishes himself as one of the top, small-college coaches in the West Region, if not the entire nation. Prior to the start of the season, his teams have posted an overall winning percentage of .684 (as of 2012), which includes an impressive .781 mark in SCIAC play while winning 10 championships. Maynard continues to build on the pride and tradition of Bulldog football, including six NCAA playoff appearances. During his tenure, he has coached multiple All-Americans, All-SCIAC honorees, and academic standouts.

During the spring of 2005, Maynard was inducted into the Bulldog Bench Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame at the University of Redlands. In addition, he earned the prestigious University of Redlands Frank J. Rice Memorial Award for Community Service in 1999. The All-American Football Foundation honored Maynard with the Johnny Vaught Head Coach Award in 2007. Just two years later, he was voted the "top athlete to ever grace the halls of Farmer City High School."

On Saturday, Head Football Coach Mike Maynard and the University of Redlands football staff join more than 9,000 coaches from over 500 schools nationwide to support the Coach to Cure MD Program. Although the national event took place on September 28, the Bulldogs had a bye that night and have chosen to participate during Saturday's game against the University of La Verne. Redlands' coaches are officially participating by donning patches on their sleeves during the Homecoming game to help raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Furthermore, the Bulldogs hope to inspire football fans to donate to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research by going online to www.CoachtoCureMD.org or by simply texting the word "Cure" to 90999 to make a one-time $5 donation ($5 will be automatically be added to your mobile phone bill).

THE LEOPARDS

Last Week: The University of La Verne notched a 41-27 win over Whittier College in front of a solid Homecoming crowd at Ortmayer Stadium. La Verne overcame a slow start that resulted in a 10-point deficit, before the Leopards' special teams initiated a turnaround by blocking a field-goal attempt late in the first quarter. The Leopards then withstood the Poets' high-powered passing attack by forcing six turnovers, highlighted by a pair of pick-six plays.

The Lowdown on La Verne: Expect the Leopards to work to establish their run-game early in Saturday's contest. Last year, Matthew Biggers led the SCIAC in rushing yards with 1,397 on the season. His 155.2 rushing yards per game also topped the conference while ranking fourth nationally among Division III. So far this season, he leads the Leopards with 344 yards on 96 carries, landing sixth among the SCIAC.

In addition, count on solid contributions from new signal-caller Brian Duboski. His size and speed make him a dual-threat quarterback as a first-year transfer from Western State Colorado University. He has completed 43 passes for 603 yards this season, highlighted by four passing touchdowns to three different receivers in John Lilly, Andres Fernandez, and Gus Viramontes.

On defense, the Leopards rely on Anthony Arguello and Quinn Goldman to set the tone for a physical style of play. Currently, Arguello leads the team with 30 total stops, including 7.5 tackles for a loss, while Goldman has 25 tackles and seven for a loss. On pass protection, Manuel Macias and Matt Canlas account for four of the team's six interceptions. But Blayr Stone sits first among the Leopards with six pass break-ups.

At the Helm: Christopher Krich is in his third season as Head Coach of the University of La Verne football team. The Leopards finished the 2012 campaign with a 4-5 overall record along with a winning mark of 4-3 in conference. In his initial season with the Leopards, Krich made an immediate impact, as La Verne posted a 4-5 record, which included a 3-3 showing in the SCIAC. The team's four overall wins in 2011 equaled the combined win-total of the previous four seasons at La Verne (2007-10). Krich arrived at La Verne from Millikin University (IL), where he completed five seasons as the team's defensive coordinator.

LAST MEETING

During the teams' previous meeting on Oct. 13, 2012, the University of Redlands scored early and often en route to capturing a solid road-win over the University of La Verne. A 17-7 halftime lead quickly turned into a 40-21 decision as the Bulldogs exploded for 20 points in the final frame, including a pair of touchdowns in a 47-second span.

SERIES HISTORY

On the heels of a 17-game win streak, Redlands leads the series history with a 69-17-1 record over the Leopards. This includes an impressive 22-4 effort by Coach Maynard's teams, dating back to 1988.
