U of R Baseball Sweeps SCIAC Baseball Weekly Awards for Opening Weekend

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced earlier today that two University of Redlands student-athletes were named opening weekend's Baseball Athletes of the Week. Junior second baseman Andrew Renteria (Van Nuys, CA) earned Hitter of the Week honors, while sophomore pitcher Chris Fousek Jr. (San Diego, CA) stepped up to win Pitcher of the Week.

During two games against Pacific University (OR), Renteria maintained a .500 batting average and a slugging percentage of 1.000. He provided a consistent effort by going 2-for-4 at the plate in each game against the Boxers.  On Friday, he slammed the first home run of his Bulldog career for an RBI and a run scored. In a critical moment in game two of the series, Renteria brought in two runs off a single to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth.

Fousek Jr. kicked off his season with a solid start on the mound in six innings pitched for a no decision. He threw eight strikeouts and held his foes to a .150 batting average and only allowed three hits and two runs.  He came out of the gates hot with a pair of three-up-and-three-down innings, which allowed the Bulldogs to capitalize for an early 1-0 lead.

Redlands (0-2) hits the road for a four-game set at the Cactus Classic from February 7-9 in Tucson, AZ. The Bulldogs kick off the trip by facing Pacific Lutheran University on Thursday at 11 a.m.
